As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but feel like a movie aficionado when it comes to the captivating world of Korean entertainment. From heart-stopping thrillers that leave you on the edge of your seat, to romantic tales that tug at your heartstrings, comedies that make you laugh out loud, and slice-of-life dramas that resonate deeply – the Korean film industry never fails to deliver. And guess what? September 2024 is shaping up to be a blockbuster month for Korean cinema.
Concerning My Daughter
The film titled “About My Daughter” first appeared at the Busan International Film Festival in October 2023. This everyday-life movie is scheduled for nationwide release in theaters across South Korea on September 4, 2024. It’s worth mentioning that this is Lee Mi-Rang’s directorial debut, and she has played a significant role in writing its script. She has previously directed short films like “The Bath”, “Getting Married to a Vietnamese Girl”, and “Chunjung”.
Titled “Concerning My Daughter,” this series centers around the lives of Oh Min-Ae and her independent offspring, Im Se-Mi. Despite her nurturing instincts, Oh Min-Ae finds herself in poverty, with little more than a dilapidated home to call her own. The narrative takes an intriguing turn when Se-Mi, who identifies as a lesbian, brings her partner, Re-In, into their shared living space after financial difficulties force them to seek refuge elsewhere. When Min-Ae refuses to provide financial aid, Se-Mi discovers she is unable to secure a loan from the bank, leading her to make the decision to stay with her mother instead.
Despite feeling unsettled about the new living situation, she redirects her energy towards her job at the nursing home. She gives her all to assist and care for Je Hwi, an elderly woman who lives alone and has dementia. In this process, she finds a connection with Je Hwi’s loneliness, which seems to resonate with her own feelings about her situation.
I, the Executioner
On September 13, 2024, the much-anticipated action movie from Korea titled “The Executioner” will hit South Korean theaters. Earlier this year, it made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Notable actors Jung Hae-In and Hwang Jung-Min lead the cast, alongside Oh Dal-Su, Park Gun-Ha, Jang Yoon-Ju, Kim Shi-Hoo, and Oh Dae-Hwan.
Title character in the sequel to the 2015 blockbuster Veteran is the Executioner. This film follows the exploits of Detective Seo Do-Cheol, a seasoned professional on the violent crimes unit, alongside newcomer detective Park Sun-Woo as they collaborate to track down a ruthless serial killer in their latest case.
By the Stream
Coming soon to South Korean cinemas on September 18, 2024, is another highly anticipated Korean movie titled “By the Stream”. This film made its debut at the 77th Locarno Film Festival in August 2024. Renowned director, writer, and producer Hong Sang-Soo has helmed this captivating production. The primary cast members include Kwon Hae-Hyo, Kim Min-Hee, and Cho Yun-Hee. Additionally, Ha Seong-Guk, Park Hanbitnara, Kang Soyi, and Park Miso, among others, complete the talented ensemble for this film.
Alongside the River narrates the tale of art instructor, Jeonim, and her uncle, Sieon – a retired actor. The narrative begins as Jeonim persuades Sieon to take on the directorial role for a theatrical production at her school. As events unfold, a shocking incident takes place near a river, drawing both Jeonim and Sieon into its aftermath.
