As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say that the recent controversy surrounding the Streamer of the Year award at the Esports Awards has left me quite perplexed. While I respect Asmongold’s opinion and his significant contributions to the gaming community, I find it hard to agree with his sentiments about Rivers_gg’s win being a “diversity pick.”

Streamer Samy Rivers, more commonly known as Rivers_gg, has been crowned the Streamer of the Year at the Esports Awards held in Saudi Arabia. This victory, however, has sparked controversy, as fellow streamer Zach “Asmongold” voiced his discontent with the outcome, alleging that the decision may have been biased towards the winner’s gender.

In simpler terms, the popular Mexican Twitch streamer known as “Rivers_gg” frequently streams games like Call of Duty, Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto V, and Just Chatting. Recently, she was honored with the prestigious title of Streamer of the Year at the Esports Awards held in Saudi Arabia for her achievements over the past years. However, Asmongold expressed criticism towards her win, implying that she may have only won due to being a woman and suggesting potential bias or manipulation in the awards process to promote diversity.

If IShowSpeed, Kai Cenat, or CaseOH had been declared “Streamer of the Year,” Asmongold would have graciously accepted the outcome. However, he found it unsettling when a female streamer won instead. Similarly, xQc wasn’t thrilled about losing, but fortunately, his displeasure wasn’t due to the winner being a woman.

“I’m salty because it was obviously a diversity pick because she is a woman, and everybody knows it. It should have been Speed or Kai or CaseOH, or like three other people. Everybody knows it. It’s f***ing obnoxious (…) You put her up there ’cause she’s a female. It’s embarrassing, and it’s patronizing. It’s not even a top female streamer, either. It’s bullsh**. It’s not even close.”

To clarify, the winners were chosen based on public voting within the community. Notably, River, who boasts a massive fanbase of 6.3 million on Twitch, regularly attracts over 10,000 viewers per stream and excels across various social media platforms.

According to the Esports Awards, the criteria for the Streamer of the Year award are as follows:

“This annual award, titled ‘Streamer of the Year’, recognizes the exceptional streamer who has significantly elevated the quality of streaming and boosted the global visibility of esports over the past year. The recipient will have demonstrated unwavering excellence in streaming, continuously expanding the boundaries of what can be achieved, and providing non-stop entertainment to a substantial fanbase throughout the judging period.”

Rivers accomplishes just that. She surpassed a million followers on Twitch approximately two years back, and her following has been steadily increasing since then.

It’s unfair for Asmongold to assert that the awards were fixed merely because she is a female influencer who streams in Spanish and has played more than 200 games, from Minecraft to Call of Duty: Warzone, without providing any proof.
