As a long-time fan of Kelly Monaco and her iconic character Sam McCall in General Hospital, this news has left me reeling like a fish out of water! Over two decades and countless episodes later, Sam has been such an integral part of the show’s fabric and my television viewing experience.
It’s being reported that actress Kelly Monaco, famous for portraying Sam McCall on ABC’s “General Hospital,” may be departing from the daytime soap soon. When first introduced, Sam was a criminal mastermind. However, her character has undergone an incredible transformation throughout the years, evolving into a respected figure in Port Charles, a skilled private investigator, and a thriving businesswoman. She is also highly beloved by “General Hospital” viewers. As such, these reports have sparked quite a reaction within the fan community.
Kelly Monaco’s Sam McCall reportedly leaving General Hospital
Based on reports from Soap Opera Network, ABC has chosen to end Kelly Monaco’s popular character Sam McCall from General Hospital. The reason behind this choice remains unknown. According to the report, Sam McCall’s character is expected to be written out this autumn, but the specific date of her final episode hasn’t been disclosed yet. Sources claim that Monaco was taken aback when she found out about the decision.
Monaco has played Sam in over 2,000 episodes for more than two decades, with occasional absences. In August 2020 and February 2022, Lindsay Hartley stepped in as Sam when Monaco was unavailable. Recently, from January 2024, she has taken over the role once again, including in the present month.
In the year 2006, Monaco received a nomination for the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series due to her exceptional work on the show. However, it was Kim Zimmer who took home the award that year, having been recognized for her role as Reva Lewis in Guiding Light.
Prior to joining General Hospital, the actress known as Monaco was part of the Port Charles spin-off series cast from 2000 to 2003. During this time, she played two different characters – Livvie Locke and Tess Ramsey. In 2003, she received her first Daytime Emmy nomination (for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series) for her performance as Livvie/Tess. Later in August 2005, Monaco reappeared on General Hospital portraying McCall’s look-alike, Alicia Montenegro.
