La Bamba Remake in the Works From Sony, Writer Announced

As a gamer with an extensive background in both music and film, I must say that I am genuinely excited about the upcoming remake of La Bamba. Growing up, the original 1987 film was one of my favorites, capturing the essence of a remarkable life and talent that resonated across generations.

A remake of 1987’s La Bamba is in the works.

1987’s La Bamba, a film by Luis Valdez, chronicles the life story of musician Ritchie Valens, with Lou Diamond Phillips portraying him on screen. The cast also includes Esai Morales as Roberto “Bob” Morales, Rosanna DeSoto as Connie Valenzuela, Elizabeth Peña as Rosie Morales, Danielle von Zerneck as Donna Ludwig, Joe Pantoliano as Bob Keane, Rick Dees as Ted Quillin, and Stephen Lee as The Big Bopper.

Per Variety, Mucho Mas Media and Sony Pictures are now developing a remake of La Bamba.

Who is involved in Sony and Mucho Mas Media’s La Bamba remake?

In the upcoming remake of La Bamba, Louis Valdez will take on the role as executive producer. Meanwhile, José Rivera has been chosen to pen the script for this project. Notably, Rivera has previously worked on several screenplays, including The Motorcycle Diaries (2004), Letters to Juliet (2010), On the Road (2012), and The 33 (2015), among others.

“Valdez remarked that both Ritchie Valens’ rock and roll hits from 1987, as well as the biopic La Bamba he produced, have managed to remain relevant over time. He added that the brief life and career of Richard Valenzuela still resonates deeply with audiences worldwide, inspiring new admirers. As more information about his life emerges, a fresh cinematic portrayal of his youthful spirit at age seventeen can only enhance his enduring mystique.”

In this project, Javier Chapa is taking on the role of the film’s producer, under the banner of Mucho Mas Media. Meanwhile, Sherrese Clarke Soares, Phillip Braun, Robert Muñoz, Simon Wise, Vincent Cordero, and Bruce Barshop are all contributing as executive producers.

“It’s a privilege and a humbling experience for us to share Ritche’s tale – the account of an exceptionally talented young Latino individual who moved countless hearts through his music. We strive to honor and amplify the original production, just as Luis Valdez and the creators of La Bamba made it a timeless classic.”

As a gaming enthusiast diving into some retro vibes, I’m stoked to share that you can now rent or buy the 1987 version of La Bamba on modern platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and others. Happy streaming!
