August Nintendo Direct Announced, Won’t Include Switch 2 Updates

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tinge of anticipation as Nintendo prepares for its August Direct. The dual showcases promise an exciting lineup, though I must admit, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for that Hollow Knight: Silksong trailer in the Indie World Showcase.

Nintendo has revealed that their upcoming August event, known as the Nintendo Direct, will feature not one but two presentations. Importantly, it’s been clarified that neither of these sessions will focus on updates regarding the Nintendo Switch 2.

When is the August Nintendo Direct?

The Indie World Showcase will begin on August 27, 2024 at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT. The August Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase will stream right after. The live stream will clock in around 40 minutes, according to Nintendo. It can be streamed on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel here.

Just as with recent Nintendo Direct broadcasts, Nintendo has clarified that they won’t discuss updates regarding the upcoming Switch model during these presentations. In a tweet, the company explains, “We want to remind everyone, there will be no discussion about the successor of Nintendo Switch during either of these events.”

Nintendo hasn’t given details on how the total 40 minutes will be split between the two showcases, but past Indie World and Partner Showcases have usually lasted around 20 minutes each. In these events, the release windows for the featured games are typically provided. Here, there is no such information, indicating that some of the announced games may not launch until 2025 or later.

Nintendo’s Indie World Showcases highlight independent video games, such as Antonblast, Animal Well, Steamworld Heist 2, and Lorlei and the Laser Eyes, which were showcased in April. Since these events primarily feature indie titles, many are excitedly awaiting a trailer for Hollow Knight: Silksong.

In the August Nintendo Direct: Partner Spotlight, you won’t find any games developed by Nintendo itself; instead, it showcases titles from other game publishers and developers. Previously, we saw presentations of games such as Grounded, Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure, and Pentiment.

Information regarding the next-generation Nintendo Switch (often referred to as the Switch 2) is still scarce. However, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa had hinted earlier in May that an official announcement about this new console would be made within the current fiscal year. Since the fiscal year for Nintendo ends in March 2025, it’s anticipated that details or even a reveal of the Switch 2 will be made by then.
