In September, Abrams ComicArts will release “Breaking the Chain: The Guard Dog Story,” marking the 30th anniversary of Patrick McDonnell’s beloved comic strip “Mutts.” This new publication offers a fresh tale about the dog character who first appeared in 1995 within the “Mutts” series.
“Guard Dog’s Tale: Unshackled Beginnings”: The narrative unfolds as Guard Dog finds himself deserted by his master, enduring loneliness and hardship. However, fate intervenes when he encounters Mooch, Earl, and Doozy – animal companions and a compassionate neighborhood girl – who rally to save their friend from his plight.

McDonnell shared with ComingSoon that “Mutts” represents my deep affection for all creatures and the unique connection we establish with our cherished pets. I strive to present the world as they see it and advocate for those who cannot speak. The character of Guard Dog was born to shed light on the hardships faced by chained dogs. My upcoming book, “Breaking the Chain,” honors his liberation and the young girl, Doozy, who rescued him.

Rob Thomas expressed, “Mari and I founded Sidewalk Angels Foundation back in 2003, a non-profit organization that’s been providing essential funds and support to over 20 no-kill animal shelters and rescue groups. These organizations operate across the US, Caribbean, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Serbia, all working towards ensuring animals are treated fairly and humanely. Since its inception, our foundation has assisted in large-scale rescue operations, covered significant veterinary costs, built suitable shelter facilities, launched low-cost spay and neuter programs, and facilitated adoptions to help animals find their forever homes. We’re resolute in our efforts to combat cruelty, breed discrimination, and work with educational programs that instill kindness and compassion towards animals in children. Additionally, we aim to collaborate with homeless shelters to prevent families in need from being forced to relinquish their pets. Our objective is to assist twice as many organizations in the near future while continuing to bring about positive change for those who can’t speak for themselves.”
