Rainbow Six Siege brings double trouble with Operation Twin Shells

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of tactical shooter experience under my belt, I must say that Ubisoft Montreal’s announcement of Rainbow Six Siege’s next season, Operation Twin Shells, has me genuinely excited. The addition of Skopos, the Defender better known as Kure Galanos from Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield, is a nod to the series’ rich history that I appreciate.

On Sunday, the team at Ubisoft Montreal will unveil the next season for Rainbow Six Siege. Following a spring spent enhancing parts of its existing cast, Siege is now focusing on introducing new characters as part of Operation Twin Shells. The most recent addition to the Siege lineup might be recognizable to long-time followers of Ubisoft’s tactical shooter franchise.

In the new addition to Rainbow Six Siege, dubbed Operation Twin Shells, we introduce Skopos, previously known as Kure Galanos from Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield. You may remember Galanos as one of Gerald Morris’ teammates, who was left wheelchair-bound after an explosion during a mission earlier this year where Deimos, formerly Gerald Morris, betrayed the team. Since then, Galanos has been determined to return to action, and has ingeniously transformed her wheelchair into a command center. Although she can’t join the fight physically, she can now control two robotic operatives from afar.

Skopos’ mechanical operatives differ significantly from anything observed in Siege thus far. Each robot she controls operates independently, with only one robot being managed at a given moment. The unengaged robot assumes a stationary posture and protects itself, serving as a makeshift barrier when strategically placed. The active robot functions similarly to standard Siege characters, but it’s crucial to consider the importance of positioning for these robots. If the attacking robot is damaged or destroyed, Skopos becomes incapacitated, unable to switch control to the idle robot due to a disrupted connection.

Regarding the defense robot, it serves not just as a protective shield but also as an intelligence tool. Equipped with a camera within its casing, the robot can be controlled by Skorpos or her teammates. When Skorpos is monitoring the camera feed, she’ll have the ability to swap the states of the two robots instantly, effectively switching their positions on the spot. However, it’s important to note that this switch is possible only when the active robot is in a position to deploy its defensive shell.

Collaboration will be crucial when Skorpos deploys two of his robots in the game. These mechanical units are not indestructible; they can be vulnerable to explosives and devices from operators like Mute and Dokkaebi. Notably, these robots cannot be repaired or reinforced with Rook’s armor vests. On a positive note, they do not require oxygen, rendering them impervious to Fenrir and his fear-inducing gas.

Rainbow Six Siege brings double trouble with Operation Twin Shells

In the upcoming update for Operation Twin Shells, the Attack team’s drones will receive an enhancement. For over a decade, these drones have remained largely unaltered, but the Siege team is introducing new features designed to keep them operational. The newly introduced Drone Speed-up provides a temporary speed boost of up to three times for a player’s drone. This enables players to outmaneuver defenders who may have detected them or cover more ground during the preparation phase. Additionally, the Drone Boost will be accessible to Brava and her Kludge Drone. On the flip side, if Mozzie captures an enemy drone with his Pest Launcher, he too can utilize their Drone Speed-up.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed Ubisoft Montreal has been vocal about tackling cheating and toxic behavior within Rainbow Six Siege. Their latest strategy involves a method called binary hardening, which is designed to keep cheat software out of the game. They’re also ramping up the speed at which they ban offenders, promising a stronger response than ever before. When it comes to addressing toxicity, they’re working on a new and improved Reputation Center down the line. The idea is to help players establish positive reputations while cracking down on repeat offenders.

The upcoming operation, dubbed “Operation Twin Shells,” will feature adjustments for balance, a fresh outfit for Jaeger, and additional content. Players won’t have to wait too long to explore these new additions as Operation Twin Shells is set to debut on the Rainbow Six Siege Test Server this coming Monday, 26th August.

This preview is based on a developer briefing held via Discord.
