As a seasoned gamer with memories of floppy disks and dial-up modems, I can’t help but feel a rush of nostalgia upon hearing that the original Marathon trilogy is now available for free on Steam! Back in the day, these games were the epitome of innovation, blending first-person shooter gameplay with intricate puzzles.
As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news about my beloved Marathon series! Though the current development journey for Bungie’s Marathon project might be rocky, we fans have a fantastic opportunity to revisit the games that ignited it all!
For some time now, the developers’ group behind Aleph One has been managing the classic Marathon games available on Steam. This week, they released these games – Classic Marathon, Classic Marathon 2, and Classic Marathon Infinity – for free on their respective Steam pages, along with an update. These original games share a resemblance to Doom in their fundamental structure, but they are more than just shoot-em-ups. The Marathon series places a greater focus on puzzles compared to the Doom games, making them more of a thinking person’s game rather than just run and gun.
Players now have an opportunity to play the original Marathon games for free, giving them a taste of where this franchise originated and a glimpse into what’s to come as Bungie works towards reviving the series. Notably, given that the new game has faced several delays, pushing its release into 2025, and a significant layoff of more than 200 employees at the studio, the classic Marathon games might be the best and most affordable way to explore this franchise in the near future.
Despite this, the Classic Marathon series is still an enjoyable piece of gaming nostalgia.
