As a devoted golf enthusiast who has followed Hideki Matsuyama’s career closely, I must say his resilience and determination are truly inspiring. Despite facing numerous setbacks due to injuries over the past few years, he continues to rank among the world’s top golfers and push through adversity time and time again.
There’s been a lot of curiosity among golf enthusiasts about why Hideki Matsuyama had to pull out unexpectedly from the 2024 BMW Championship on Friday, August 23, given that he was leading after the initial round. However, regular followers of the prominent Japanese golfer might not find this too surprising, considering his history of injuries over the past few years, which have often sidelined him from tournaments. Despite his health issues, Matsuyama remains among the Top 10 golfers globally and is positioned third in the FedEx Cup ahead of the championship. Here’s the latest news on Hideki Matsuyama’s injury that led to his withdrawal in August 2024.
Why Did Hideki Matsuyama withdraw from the 2024 BMW Championship?
Hideki Matsuyama was forced to withdraw from the 2024 BMW Championship due to a lower back injury.
Straight from the PGA Tour, Matsuyama has shared some disappointing news: he’s forced to withdraw from the BMW Championship due to lower back pain that flared up during his warm-up on Friday. In a statement, he expressed regret, saying that the discomfort was so severe it prevented him from playing today.
If you find this scenario reminiscent, Matsuyama similarly dropped out of the 2023 BMW Championship because of a back issue. Unfortunately, the golfer has faced a series of back troubles throughout the year, causing him to withdraw from the Wells Fargo Championship in May due to a back injury. Additionally, he grappled with back pain at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March, but managed to carry on.
2022 didn’t bring significant improvement for him either, as a back injury led to his withdrawal from the 2022 Players Championship, followed by neck injuries that sidelined him from both the 2022 Valero Texas Open and the 2022 Cadence Bank Houston Open.
Matsuyama faced difficulties but emerged victorious in The Genesis Invitational in February, the FedEx St. Jude Championship in August, and earned a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, with Scottie Scheffler taking the gold. Assuming he recovers on schedule, he will participate in the TOUR Championship next week on August 29.
