The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Anime | Release Date, Cast, Plot & More

As a seasoned gamer and Tolkien enthusiast who has battled countless orcs and trolls in the lands of Middle Earth, I eagerly anticipate the upcoming anime film, “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.” Having lived through the epic battles of Helm’s Deep, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as I learn that the story will focus on the reign of King Helm Hammerhand and the war that forced him to retreat into the very gorge that bears his name.

➢ Is it fresh in your mind about the fortress known as Helm’s Deep? Indeed, you might believe that the name of the structure itself is Helm’s Deep, but you would be mistaken. The actual fortification goes by the name Hornburg and was constructed during the Second Age. However, the gorge where Hornburg stands is what is truly called Helm’s Deep.

The valley, known as Helm’s Deep, derives its name from King Helm Hammerhand of Rohan, who took refuge there in the year 2758 of the Third Age. This upcoming anime movie will focus on the reign of this king and the war that drove him into Helm’s Deep. Apologies for the lengthy explanation; as a Tolkien fan, you’re accustomed to such detail.

The War of the Rohirrim: Cast For The Anime

In the production of The War of the Rohirrim, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema spared no effort in securing high-profile talent (both on-screen and off) for the venture. Although a comprehensive list of cast members hasn’t been released yet, we can already confirm that some well-known figures will make up the principal cast.

  • Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand
  • Luke Pasqualino as Wulf
  • Shaun Dooley as Freca
  • Laurence Ubong Williams as Fréaláf
  • Gaia Wise as Hera Hammerhand

We’re sure they’ll smash it.

The War of the Rohirrim: Plot

Over a span of eighteen years, from his coronation as Rohan’s ninth king in TA 2741 to his passing in TA 2759, Helm Hammerhand was embroiled in constant conflict with the Dunlendings, Easterlings, and the Corsairs of Umbar. This long-lasting war is chronically detailed in The War of the Rohirrim.

  • Warner Bros. Plans To Expand Harry Potter & Lord of the Rings Franchises

In this conflict, Helm Hammerhand’s chief antagonist will be the chieftain Freca, along with his son Wulf, who serves as the primary villain in the movie. Interestingly, Freca attempted to coerce Helm into arranging a marriage between Helm’s daughter and Wulf, an agreement that could have brought peace. However, instead of agreeing to the proposal, Helm delivered such a powerful punch that it proved fatal for Freca.

During this period, the war reached its peak. Wulf ascended as the ruler of the Dunlendings, causing Rohan to be overrun, forcing Helm to retreat to the Hornburg, and from there, the king continued his life with unyielding determination, resisting the Dunlendings from this defensive position. Interestingly, it was his nephew, Fréaláf Hildeson, who ultimately vanquished the foe and reclaimed Rohan. However, in this narrative, it’s the heroic daughter, Hera, who will step into the limelight.

How Lore-Accurate Is The War of the Rohirrim?

As a die-hard fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the narrative behind The War of the Rohirrim, which seems to be inspired by the real-life exploits of Helm Hammerhand. Known from the texts, he indeed waged a fierce battle against the Dunland Wildmen. However, since the specifics of the tale are yet unknown, it’s uncertain whether they will replicate J.R.R. Tolkien’s original portrayal. Still, we can speculate on how closely the story may adhere to the lore, taking cues from Amazon’s recent Rings of Power series as a benchmark.

The question of lore-compliance is an incredibly pertinent one for the LotR community, and it was constantly asked of The Rings of Power. Now, The Rings of Power wasn’t perfectly lore-accurate, but it was trying to tell a very expansive story, and the show’s writers were very restricted in which parts of the source material they could use. The Rings of Power show was basically retelling a condensed version of everything that happened in the Second Age, but using only about 5% of the possible source material.

  • New Lord Of The Rings Movies Confirmed, Peter Jackson Possibly Involved

Compared to other tales in the Legendarium, the War of the Rohirrim primarily revolves around the life of one ruler, Helm Hammerhand. We only possess two accounts detailing this story within the lore.

  • The Lord of the Rings, Appendix A: Annals of the Kings and Rulers, II: The House of Eorl
  • Unfinished Tales, Part Three: The Third Age, V: “The Battles of the Fords of Isen”

It’s common knowledge that they won’t be able to access The Unfinished Tales because no studio can claim rights to that exclusive material. However, they do possess the Lord of the Rings Appendix. Consequently, unlike TRoP (The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies), The War of the Rohirrim will have half of the available source material related to the subject at their disposal. This increased access to information is likely to make it more accurate in terms of lore compared to TRoP, although no guarantees can be made.
