As a dedicated fan of captivating narratives and enchanting musical scores, I can’t help but be thrilled at the prospect of diving deeper into the world of Pachinko with its Season 2 soundtrack. Having had the privilege of experiencing the first season, I eagerly anticipate how Nico Muhly’s compositions will further weave their magic around the poignant tale of love, loss, and identity that spans generations and continents.

For Season 2, I had the privilege of composing music mainly based on visual cues, yet I also enjoyed the liberty to incorporate thematic elements in extended forms, resembling chamber music. Although 90% of the final score was tailored to the visuals, the suite of thematic material was invaluable for assigning and connecting specific sounds and instruments to each character. Since Hugh and Suzana Perić (the music editor) and I shared a strong bond of trust, our process was natural and fluid. We worked within the limitations of a compact chamber ensemble, so I had to be creative in finding ways to expand the music without compromising its intimacy.
On August 23rd, Lakeshore Records plans to digitally distribute the soundtrack for Pachinko Season 2 – an original series from Apple TV+. The music captures the epic scope of the drama with a combination of powerful strings, expressive piano, and a full orchestra. These elements underscore the unfolding saga of history in Korea, Japan, and America, weaving an indelible tale of war and peace, love and sorrow, triumph and retribution. The series, adapted from the critically-acclaimed novel by the same name and developed by Soo Hugh, debuts today on Apple TV+.
