Anya Taylor-Joy returning to Netflix (no, it's not The Queen's Gambit season 2)

As a gamer with a penchant for binge-watching, I can hardly contain my excitement for Anya Taylor-Joy’s latest venture into the small screen world – “How to Kill Your Family.” Four years after her captivating performance in “The Queen’s Gambit,” she’s back with another Netflix original that promises to be a rollercoaster of emotions.

Four years have passed since Anya Taylor-Joy made her big break in the hit Netflix limited series “The Queen’s Gambit.” Although some viewers continue to dream about a potential second season of this critically acclaimed show that brought Taylor-Joy an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe victory, she is now teaming up with Netflix once more for a brand new suspenseful series.

On August 21st, it was revealed at the Edinburgh TV Festival that actress Anya Taylor-Joy will both star in and oversee production for the series titled “How to Kill Your Family“, an adaptation of Bella Mackie’s novel with the same name. This British production, yet to be labeled as a “limited” series by Netflix, is set to consist of eight episodes for its debut season, with scriptwriting handled by Emma Moran.

Anya Taylor-Joy shared her excitement for her upcoming role with Netflix:

As soon as I turned the last page, I knew I had to be a part of bringing this story to life. After some (light) stalking of the inimitable Bella Mackie, I could not be more thrilled to be collaborating with the team that is executive producers Sally Woodward Gentle, Lizzie Rusbridger, and Emma. I am looking forward to getting our hands even dirtier.

Anya Taylor-Joy

In her first television role since captivating audiences with “The Queen’s Gambit” on Netflix in 2020, Anya Taylor-Joy now stars in the series titled “How to Kill Your Family“. Before this, she provided voiceover for the 2019 animated Netflix show “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance“, and made appearances on multiple episodes of “Peaky Blinders”. Given her previous success with Netflix, it’s fitting that she returns to television on their platform.

Anya Taylor-Joy starring in How to Kill Your Family series

In the film titled “How to Kill Your Family“, Emma Taylor-Joy portrays the role of the main character Grace, who is a cold-blooded killer. Despite being the daughter of the wealthy Simon Artemis, she’s been unable to enjoy his wealth due to her origins from an affair. Unfortunately, her mother’s passing leaves her isolated once more by her “family,” causing her to retaliate with deadly vengeance.

In Mackie’s book, I found myself drawn into the chilling tale of Grace, a gamer’s nightmare come to life. She systematically eliminates her estranged kin in gruesome and captivating ways, leaving us on the edge of our seats, waiting for the next twist. The series promises to deliver the raw violence and over-the-top atmosphere that made the novel such a page-turner, while also offering a glimpse into Grace’s heart through the exceptional acting talents of Anya Taylor-Joy, adding a layer of empathy that keeps us rooting for her, despite her dark actions.

Although it’s thrilling that “How to Kill Your Family” is set to arrive on Netflix, no new cast members have been revealed since the series was announced. Furthermore, Netflix hasn’t shared any information regarding when production will start. As of now, Moran seems to be focusing on scriptwriting while Grace’s family casting takes place, and Taylor-Joy is scheduled to film “Sacrifice” in September 2024.

The timeline for starting production and premiering the Netflix original series “How to Kill Your Family” is not yet definitive, but it may begin as late as this year or early next year, potentially leading to its release on Netflix between late 2025 and 2026. Keep an eye out for updates as this eagerly awaited series promises to be one of the most exciting new additions to Netflix’s original content.
