Mercedes Mone Was Set for a WWE Comeback in 2023

As a fan who has followed Mercedes Mone‘s career since her days in WWE, it’s fascinating to see how her journey has unfolded. Her decision to leave WWE and explore other opportunities was a bold move, but one that seems to have paid off, given her success in NJPW and now AEW.

Mercedes Mone, a prominent figure in AEW, has shared that she had planned to rejoin WWE in the year 2023. Previously, both Naomi and Mercedes Mone departed from WWE in May of 2022, expressing discontent with Vince McMahon’s creative choices. While Naomi experienced triumph in TNA Wrestling, Mone carved her own path to success in NJPW. Her debut for New Japan Pro Wrestling occurred at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17.

Initially, Naomi re-entered WWE this year, appearing in the Women’s Royal Rumble match. On the other hand, Mercedes Mone, who previously thrived in NJPW, decided to sign with AEW rather than going back to WWE. Notably, Mone disclosed her intention to make a comeback at WrestleMania 39 for WWE.

In her newsletter, Mercedes Mone shared that she intended to make a comeback to WWE during WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles. She explained, “It’s amusing because before last year’s All In event, I went to an LA Rams game at the new Sofi stadium in LA. Naturally, Kev and I were on the field for it – that’s just our style. It was enjoyable, but in the back of my mind, I couldn’t help thinking, ‘This is where WrestleMania will be.’ The stadium is massive and stunning, located in Hollywood, the city of angels. With Snoop Dogg being my cousin and me being part of the Mandalorian cast, it seemed only fitting to be here. So, at the end of the game, I leaned over to Kev and said, ‘I need to be here for Mania.’ At that moment, that’s exactly how I felt and what my plan was.”

As a dedicated fan, I was eagerly anticipating Mercedes Mone’s comeback to WWE at WrestleMania 39 in LA. However, it seems that the surge of AEW has prompted a shift in her original plans.

The real reason Mercedes Mone’s WWE return never materialized

Previously, AEW organized its inaugural stadium event titled “AEW All In” at the renowned Wembley Stadium in London. Approximately 80,000 spectators were in attendance, making it one of the largest shows outside WWE in many years. Notably, Mercedes Mone made her debut at this event, even though she was initially part of the audience.

In her newsletter, Mone shared that Tony Khan’s invitation to attend AEW All In had significantly influenced her thoughts about going back to WWE. She explained, “I was intending to rejoin WWE for WrestleMania in LA. That was until Tony extended the invite to us to witness the event. It’s important to note that there were no talks about joining AEW at that point. None whatsoever. Tony, Kevin, and I had been just exchanging friendly texts, but it was merely a casual invitation. I wanted to go not out of curiosity or to test the waters, but honestly because I genuinely love wrestling. To this day, whenever I get some free time, I still tune in to independent wrestling shows. I must admit that my passion for it remains as strong as ever.”

As a diehard fan, I’m thrilled to share that I made my AEW debut earlier this year, right in my beloved hometown of Boston. The journey has been incredible, and it reached new heights when I clinched the TBS Championship from Nyla Rose. Last year, I graced the stage at AEW All-In, and now, I’m gearing up to compete once again at this year’s All-In. The event is happening this weekend at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London, where I’ll be defending my hard-earned TBS title against Britt Baker. Can’t wait for the action!
