As a lifelong fan of James Cameron‘s groundbreaking work, I must admit that hearing his thoughts about potentially returning to the Alien franchise was both intriguing and somewhat disappointing. While it’s always exciting to imagine what new terrors he could bring to the series, his age and busy schedule make a return seem highly unlikely.
James Cameron’s “Aliens” is often praised as one of the greatest sequels ever made. Released in 1986, this film built upon the storyline introduced by the original “Alien” movie from 1979, which was directed by Ridley Scott. For quite some time now, there have been many discussions about whether Cameron will revisit this franchise. Recently, with “Alien: Romulus” performing well at cinemas around the world, Cameron has shared his thoughts on this topic.
James Cameron gives honest response on potential Alien franchise return
In a recent interview, Cameron openly discussed the possibility of revisiting the Alien franchise. Known for creating three movies that surpassed the two-billion-dollar mark at the global box office, an achievement unmatched before, he helmed Aliens in his early days. Upon its release, it grossed between $131-$183.3 million worldwide against a budget of approximately $18 million. Now, it boasts a 94% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In a conversation with The Guardian, Cameron pondered if he might rejoin the series again. However, he hinted that such an occurrence seemed rather improbable, without entirely ruling it out.
“The Avatar director expressed that the idea of another Avatar movie is heavily trodden ground for him at this time,” he said. “While he doesn’t completely dismiss the possibility, he has 23 other projects ahead of it in his queue, so it’s unlikely to happen given his age. He emphasized that one must choose their priorities carefully. In other words, he’s suggesting that despite the potential appeal, there are other projects that take precedence.”
During the same conversation, Cameron clarified rumors surrounding his role in the production of Alien: Romulus, a movie set temporally between Ridley Scott’s Alien and Aliens.
Cameron clarified, “I didn’t contribute much to the project.” He added, “I know director Fede Álvarez, and at the beginning of the process, he and his writing partner approached me with a question: ‘Do you have any suggestions?’ Although they already had numerous ideas, they seemed to be seeking something like a spiritual pilgrimage. That was years ago, after which they wrote their script without my involvement.”
Cameron disclosed that Álvarez shared a preliminary version of the film with him, and further stated that although he provided the young director with some suggestions, he played no role in shaping the final product.
Around half a year ago, he let me have a sneak peek at an early version of the movie and I offered him constructive feedback for about an hour. To set the record straight, I don’t want any credit for this whatsoever. If the film turns out to be amazing, I don’t wish to claim credit; if it falls flat, I can’t shoulder the blame! Honestly, it’s his baby, so all the praise should go where it belongs, and from what I hear, it sounds promising.
The highly anticipated movie by James Cameron, titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash”, is set to premiere in the United States on December 19, 2025.
