Despicable Me 4 Director Talks Franchise’s Future Beyond Minions 3

As a longtime fan of the Despicable Me franchise, I must say Chris Renaud’s recent revelations have left me both exhilarated and apprehensive. Having been part of this magical world for over 15 years, it’s heartening to see him leave such an indelible mark on the series through his creative vision. The final scene of Despicable Me 4, with its unexpected crossover of villains, is a testament to Renaud’s dedication and love for the franchise.

Director Chris Renaud of Despicable Me 4 recently discussed the future of this highly successful movie series. The fourth installment in the Despicable Me saga, released on July 3, 2024, raked in impressive numbers at box offices worldwide, despite mixed reviews from critics. It’s said that the film ended its theatrical run with an astonishing global gross of approximately $850 million. Following the movie’s success, Renaud has shared his thoughts on the franchise’s continuation.

Chris Renaud explains what Despicable Me 4’s final scene means

Speaking on the subject of the final scene in the movie, the American director hinted that Despicable Me 4 might mark his last project within the beloved franchise.

Just last week, I sat down for an engaging chat with ComicBook.com about the closing scene of that awesome animated movie. Towards the end, it turns out that our beloved Gru is taking part in a unique prison talent show! What’s even more intriguing is that alongside the mischievous Maxime Le Mal, a whole host of Despicable Me and Minions’ former adversaries suddenly pop up, much to my surprise.

Regarding this particular series of events, the Director of Despicable Me 4 implied his involvement in the franchise’s future by saying, “Well, I can only express my own thoughts, and I played a significant role in developing and finalizing that scene.” (Renaud’s quote paraphrased)

He went on to say, “Given that I’ve been involved with it for about 16 or 17 years, I found it intriguing to unite some of the characters from this ‘universe’ for a special occasion. It’s almost like organizing a fun gathering or crossover event.”

Additionally, Renaud hinted at possible connections between the Despicable Me series and Batman, as well as indicating that future filmmakers could bring unique perspectives to the franchise, potentially implying that he may not be involved in Despicable Me 4.

Renaud mentioned that “Batman, one of my all-time favorites, serves as the prime example. Even a filmmaker like Matt Reeves has been continuously revamping this character.”

“Though Chris Nolan’s version of Batman wrapped up, another director popped up with an intriguing concept. While we were working on it, this idea was already brewing in my mind. However, I was well aware that this wasn’t the actual state of affairs,” he pointed out.

Currently, there’s no confirmed update about a new Despicable Me movie. However, production for Minions 3 has been approved and it’s set to release in the year 2027.
