Indiana Jones and the Great Circle gameplay taps into every aspect of being Indy

As a lifelong fan of Indiana Jones and a seasoned gamer who has navigated countless adventures, I can confidently say that MachineGames is hitting all the right notes with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. From the intricate storyline to the immersive gameplay mechanics, this game promises to deliver an authentic Indy experience that fans have been waiting for.

The game of the year from Xbox and Bethesda is yet to arrive, with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle still veiled in secrecy. However, tidbits have been revealed by MachineGames over the past few months. After the Gamescom Opening Night Live presentation, a bit more was disclosed. Shacknews recently had an exclusive peek at what the team behind the Wolfenstein series has planned for Indiana Jones.

For those who aren’t familiar with the plot, Indiana Jones: The Great Circle occurs during the time gap between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. When a valuable artifact gets swiped from Marshall College’s museum, Indy embarks on an adventure to uncover what makes this relic so special, particularly intriguing to competing archaeologist Emerick Voss. Alongside an Italian journalist named Gina, our hero quickly finds himself chasing down the answer to a significant mystery called the Great Circle.

MachineGames has previously given us a lot of insights about the Indiana Jones tale, but at Gamescom, they’re focusing on showcasing even more gameplay to truly capture what it means to embody Indiana Jones. Fans familiar with the developer know their knack for creating hero characters who enjoy taking down Nazis. While B.J. Blazkowicz from Wolfenstein and Indiana Jones share some similarities in terms of adversaries, they differ greatly otherwise. The upcoming game, The Great Circle, aims to explore various aspects of what it entails to be Dr. Jones, delving deeper than just his whip and revolver, although these are certainly key elements of the character.

Indy’s trusted tool is the whip. It serves not only as a means for combat, enabling him to stun or subdue opponents in critical situations, but primarily functions for travel. In case of an urgent escape, he can launch the whip, hook it onto a support like a ceiling or wall, and propel himself forward swiftly. However, suitable anchor points aren’t always readily available. At times, players must create their own makeshift anchors using nearby objects. For instance, while navigating through ancient ruins, Indy might discover a trident on the ground. By throwing it against a wall, he can then swing across wide chasms using his whip.

Solving puzzles is a significant part of what makes Indiana Jones, well, Indy! This isn’t just about deciphering riddles, but it extends to various forms. At times, the puzzles might be visual conundrums that he needs to decode using visual cues to figure out his next move. Other times, these challenges could be more physical in nature, like finding a way to open a door or reveal a hidden pathway.

One of Indiana Jones’ most useful resources will be data and the knack to acquire it. He can utilize this skill effectively with his camera. Players can take pictures of objects within the surroundings, which might provide crucial information and help unravel more of the game’s enigma. These photographs are among the items that can be stored in Indy’s journal, a collection area for various objects to aid him on his journey. Remember, don’t hesitate to refer back to the journal, as Indiana Jones may encounter secrets or puzzles that could reveal information about a dangerous trap later in the game.

Obtaining data could also involve assuming a secret identity. Indiana Jones has always been skilled at disguising himself, and The Great Circle will utilize this aspect of his character effectively. Once Indy assumes an alias, he can gain access to restricted areas and initiate a covert segment. Gamers should be cautious of anyone who might detect the deception. Certain sections demand specific disguises for entry, so be prepared to employ this aspect of Indy’s abilities frequently during the adventure.

While Indiana Jones has a powerful mind, some situations call for powerful fists. There will be some situations where Indy may get roped into a combat scenario that doesn’t allow for use of his firearm. This will trigger a brawl, where Indy and an enemy will engage in fisticuffs. Players must watch the enemy’s movement, avoid their punches, and connect with their own until Indy can score a knockout. Some enemies may take longer than others to knock out depending on whether Indy’s taking jabs at a hapless henchman or a massive brute. In stealth scenarios, Indy can try and avoid combat entirely or he can reach over for a nearby object and clobber an enemy from behind.

Throughout the gameplay, players can accrue Adventure Points that enable them to enhance Indiana Jones’ diverse skills, tailoring his playstyle accordingly. For instance, the True Grit ability demonstrated by the MachineGames team allows Indy to recover if he gets knocked out during a fight. In addition, when he recovers, he’ll display an impressive attention to detail as he reaches for his fallen fedora and elegantly puts it back on his head with a dramatic cinematic touch.

MachineGames aims to infuse Indiana Jones’ universe with the same vitality as they’ve brought to the character himself. To achieve this, the team has meticulously studied the locales players will traverse, including connected histories and architectural styles. They’ve even delved deep into research about some of the legendary temples that Dr. Jones will encounter during his adventure, ensuring a blend of historical authenticity and developer-designed challenges.

It seems that Xbox, Bethesda, and MachineGames acknowledge the tough task at hand. Simply creating a captivating and enjoyable adventure isn’t enough; they aim to deliver an Indiana Jones experience that encapsulates everything that made the franchise iconic. From what we saw at Gamescom, it appears that MachineGames is ready for the challenge. The release date for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has been set for Monday, December 9 on PC and Xbox Series X|S, with a PlayStation 5 version expected in Spring 2025.

This preview is based on a pre-Gamescom digital briefing held by the developer via Discord.
