Fede Álvarez Talks Potential Alien: Romulus Sequel

As a seasoned gamer and sci-fi enthusiast with a soft spot for the Alien franchise, I must say that Fede Álvarez’s plans for an Alien: Romulus sequel have me genuinely excited. The idea of exploring the universe of this iconic saga, especially in the gap between the original and the first sequel, feels fresh yet familiar – much like navigating a forgotten sector in a classic space RPG.

Fede Álvarez has ideas for an Alien: Romulus sequel.

Over the weekend, the film “Alien: Romulus” directed by Álvarez, was released in U.S. cinemas. This movie, placed chronologically between the events of 1979’s “Alien” and 1986’s “Aliens”, features Cailee Spaeny as Rain, David Jonsson as Andy, along with other actors.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Álvarez was queried whether he has concepts for furthering the narrative of Alien: Romulus and if he could propose a possible sequel immediately if asked to do so.

What did Fede Álvarez say about a potential Alien: Romulus sequel?

“Absolutely, we often find ourselves delving into sequel ideas without consciously planning it,” Álvarez explained. “For us, movie-making is an organic process that doesn’t involve thinking about sequels, franchises, or tentpoles. Over the past decade here, I’ve come to understand it as a storytelling journey. So, once we wrapped up our initial project, we began wondering, ‘What if they reach Yvaga? Would it be wonderful or horrifying?’ We usually assume it might be a dreadful place that they envision as great and idealize, leading us naturally to contemplate where the story goes next and what unfolds. And then, within a few minutes, we realized, ‘This could easily become a sequel.'”

As a passionate fan, I ponder more on whether the story has room for another installment and if the audience is eager to uncover what transpires next. I prefer to gauge reactions and see if there’s a demand for it. In my viewpoint, a sequel shouldn’t be rushed; it should be developed over time, allowing the audience to yearn for more. Take Alien and Aliens as examples – they were seven years apart. However, we do have concepts in mind regarding where the story could progress.

Alien: Romulus is currently playing in United States theaters.
