As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that Square Enix’s decision to release future games simultaneously on PC and consoles seems like a wise move. I’ve seen far too many instances where delayed PC releases have dampened the initial excitement for a game, leading to less-than-stellar sales figures.
Square Enix has expressed disappointment multiple times about not meeting sales targets for their major titles in recent years. In a recent interview, when asked about their platform strategy, Final Fantasy 16’s Director Hiroshi Takai suggested that it is likely the company will release games simultaneously on PC and consoles from day one.
In a recent chat with GamesRadar+, Takai openly discussed his thoughts about potential simultaneous launches for upcoming Final Fantasy titles. When prompted about the contrast between immediate releases and the delayed PC launch experienced by Final Fantasy 16, Takai expressed his viewpoint on the subject.
Later, Hiroshi Takai expressed that although his initial viewpoint was personal, it holds a certain logic – Square Enix has clearly understood over time that simultaneous worldwide launches rather than staggered ones are necessary to meet their set objectives.
2023 saw Final Fantasy 16 receiving favorable reviews all around. However, its PC release dates were only confirmed for September 2024. Previews and demos of the game on PC have been well-received, but it’s widely believed that a delayed PC launch may have impacted FF16’s sales, as the lack of a PC version was highlighted in several Square Enix financial reports by GamesIndustry.biz.
If Square Enix intends to launch multiple games at once in the future, this strategy could potentially boost sales for upcoming titles. At present, though, fans will simply have to watch and wait for the official release of Final Fantasy 16 on PC next month to see how it performs.
