Black Myth: Wukong Enjoys Shockingly Successfully Launch, Second Most Concurrent Steam Players Of All Time

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming experiences under my belt, let me tell you that I’ve seen games come and go, some making a splash and others fading into obscurity. But Black Myth: Wukong is one game that has caught my attention, not just because it’s shattering records, but also due to its unique premise and the sheer excitement it generates.

The upcoming video game from Chinese developer Game Science, which was initially embroiled in pre-release controversy, has surprisingly proven to be a hit. In fact, it’s breaking sales records in real time.

Within its initial 24 hours after launch, Black Myth: Wukong managed to amass more than two million simultaneous players on Steam. This impressive figure places it second on the Steam’s all-time highest concurrent players list, narrowly surpassing Pal World. For now, PUBG remains in the top spot. However, it is essential to note that the Wukong figures do not account for players on PS5.

What Is Black Myth: Wukong?

The game’s scenario is modeled after the famous novel “Journey to the West,” a work that influenced the creation of Dragonball. In this game, players assume the character of a monkey who has been schooled in diverse martial arts.

The style of play is reminiscent of games in the Souls series, yet your character, being a monkey, boasts an extraordinary level of agility compared to standard characters. Frankly, I didn’t anticipate it becoming hugely popular before its release; it seemed more like a B-tier game.

Did Controversy Help?

As Black Myth: Wukong was about to be launched, it received severe criticism in the weeks prior. Initially, the developers were accused of sexism. Later, Screen Rant published an article criticizing the game for its lack of diversity. Just before the launch, some controversial streaming guidelines leaked. In these guidelines, the developer prohibited “feminist propaganda” and discussions on Chinese politics while streaming the game.

Those controversies certainly don’t seem to have hurt the game.
