As a seasoned gamer and horror enthusiast with decades of slasher flick experiences under my belt, I can’t help but feel a surge of adrenaline upon hearing the news about Brad Caleb Kane taking the helm for the A24’s Friday the 13th prequel series. Growing up in the ’80s, the original Friday the 13th films were more than just movies – they were rites of passage that shaped my childhood, instilling a lifelong love for all things horror.
A new showrunner has been hired for A24’s Friday the 13th prequel series.
In 2022, it was first revealed that a Friday the 13th prequel series titled Crystal Lake was being produced for Peacock by A24. Initially, Bryan Fuller was appointed as the showrunner; however, he departed from the project in May 2024, leading many to believe that the series had come to an end.
By the set deadline, the show has resumed its progress with Brad Caleb Kane taking over as the showrunner for “Crystal Lake”. This means he’ll be in charge of guiding the production forward at Derry.
Kane expressed his enthusiasm in a statement saying, “Ever since I witnessed Jason Voorhees pop out a man’s eyeball in 3D at the age of eight, I knew my creative journey would eventually intersect with The Masked Man. My childhood was profoundly shaped by growing up during the golden era of slasher films, and none have left a greater impact than Friday The 13th. I can’t wait for the chance to add another chapter to this legendary series, especially working alongside bold partners like Peacock and A24.”
What else do we know about the Friday the 13th prequel series?
At the moment, specifics about the plot are being kept confidential. Kane is set to serve as an executive producer, working in collaboration with Victor Miller, Marc Toberoff, Robert M. Barsamian, and Robert P. Barsamian on this project.
As a fellow enthusiast, let me share that I’m thrilled to be jointly spearheading the new It: Welcome to Derry series with Jason Fuchs. Prior to this, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to various television productions, including Fringe, Black Sails, Lodge 49, Warrior, and Tokyo Vice, among others.
So far, there have been twelve movies in the “Friday the 13th” series, starting with the original film released in 1980, followed by “Friday the 13th Part 2” and “Part 3” in 1981 and 1982 respectively. Then came “The Final Chapter” in 1984, “A New Beginning” in 1985, “Jason Lives” in 1986, “The New Blood” in 1988, “Jason Takes Manhattan” in 1989. After a break, the series continued with “Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday” in 1993, then “Jason X” in 2002, followed by a crossover film titled “Freddy vs. Jason” in 2003. The most recent addition is “Friday the 13th,” which was released in 2009.
Additionally, there existed a horror TV series titled “Friday the 13th: The Series” that debuted in 1987. This show doesn’t share any ties with the movie franchise, though.
