As a gamer who grew up in the ’90s and spent countless hours mastering the arcade halls of yesteryears, I must say, I’m genuinely intrigued by the revival of Eternal Champions on the big screen. Back then, this game was my hidden gem amidst the Mortal Kombats and Streets Fighters of the world. The concept was fresh, the characters were unique, and the action was thrilling – even if it didn’t quite dethrone the giants of its era.
As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that one of my favorite Sega fighting games from the ’90s is making a comeback! The iconic gaming company, Sega, and Skydance have officially joined forces to bring Eternal Champions, a title from 1993 for the Mega Drive and Genesis, to the big screen in the future. This collaboration promises an impressive lineup of talent on both sides, with Derek Connolly, the writer of Jurassic World’s script, being one of them. I can hardly wait to see this classic game brought to life!
According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, it’s officially announced that Sega and Skydance are teaming up. This collaboration provides insights into the skilled personnel working on the game. Alongside Connolly, Skydance is assembling David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger as producers for the project. On the other hand, Toru Nakahara, a key figure behind the latest Sonic the Hedgehog films, will be overseeing production from Sega’s side.
Eternal Champions is quite an oddball pick for a revival, let alone a film. The game was essentially Sega’s answer to Mortal Kombat, featuring a story in which the Earth is in a terrible state due to too many pivotal failures throughout history involving key figures. The phantasmal Eternal Champion oversees the Earth and time and, seeing how bad things have gotten, gathers these key figures from throughout history. He only has the energy to resurrect one of them, but any one would be pivotal in the Earth’s survival, so they engage in a tournament to see who will live.
In this game, you’d encounter matchups such as a hybrid being, part human and part robot, engaged in kickboxing against a ferocious caveman, or a detective from the 1920s Chicago battling a merman hailing from the submerged city of Atlantis. Despite not surpassing Mortal Kombat’s popularity, it was an eccentric game that left an enduring impression on many players who experienced it during its time.
Since there hasn’t been any significant new content for Eternal Champions since its Sega CD sequel was released in 1995, it will be intriguing to discover what Sega and Skydance have planned for the movie. Keep an eye on Shacknews for further updates as they become available.
