Daryl Dixon showrunner confirms the timeline, but does it make sense?

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating post-apocalyptic landscapes, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and confusion as I follow the journey of Daryl Dixon in this new spinoff series. On one hand, it’s thrilling to see our favorite characters embark on new adventures, especially one as intriguing as Daryl’s trip to France. But on the other hand, the timeline inconsistencies are leaving me scratching my head like a walker trying to figure out where its next meal is coming from.

In 2022, AMC’s hit series, The Walking Dead, wrapped up its incredible eleven-season journey with the episode titled “Rest in Peace.” The series finale saw a one-year time jump following the fall of the Commonwealth. In this time leap, audiences catch up on the status of various communities and our beloved characters. As the final episode concludes, it subtly hints at Daryl’s future adventures in the spin-off series: The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.

During their visit at Hilltop, Carol and Daryl overhear Maggie expressing the need for a conversation about the future. She explains, “There’s much we don’t know, and I believe it’s high time we explored.” Given her extensive travels in the series, which saw her meet various individuals, both good and bad, Maggie is well-aware that there are many more discoveries to be made beyond their small settlements.

At the conclusion of the episode, Daryl bids emotional farewells to Ezekiel (Khary Payton), RJ (Antony Azor) who vows to behave well, and Judith (Cailey Fleming) who assures him she’ll look after Dog. Daryl swears to watch over their parents during his journeys, and he and Carol exchange “I Love yous” before saying goodbye. In the end, Daryl hops on his motorcycle and vanishes into the sunset.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon spinoff

The tale of Daryl Dixon progresses in the spinoff titled “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon“, where he is unwillingly transported to France. Much like other direct spinoffs, fans are eager to understand the chronology between the conclusion of the primary series and the start of the spinoffs.

In a chat with Collider, Daryl Dixon’s showrunner David Zabel explained the sequence of events in the Daryl Dixon series. As per Zabel, the spinoff takes place just three to four weeks following Daryl’s farewell at the Commonwealth.

As a fan, I find myself questioning the feasibility of this journey Daryl took. He mentioned to R.J. Gaines in France that everyone he knew back home was gone, implying they had been missing for some time. This conversation seemed to suggest that Daryl had traveled to Texas after leaving the Commonwealth.

In other words, when he decided not to go to Texas, it implied that within just a couple of weeks into his exploration, he intended to come back to the Commonwealth. This was what he shared with Carol during their short radio chat prior to his trip to France. So, why did they exchange such an emotional farewell if he was planning on returning frequently?

As a fan, I find myself puzzled over Daryl’s travel timeline in recent times. His account suggests that sailing by cargo ship to France takes around 7-9 days, but if we consider his predicament of floating on an overturned rowboat, it seems much longer. This contradicts the logic of his travel log; even a detour to Texas wouldn’t extend the drive from Ohio to Freeport, Maine by car beyond the minimum 12 hours.

Fans of The Walking Dead acknowledge that the plot isn’t overly complex, but they appreciate a bit more continuity, particularly with the timeline. However, despite this, we’ll keep tuning in because the spin-offs have reinvigorated the fandom, giving it a second life.

In the second installment of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon“, titled “Carol’s Chronicles“, Carol, portrayed by McBride, reappears in the narrative. This season is set to debut on AMC and AMC+ on September 29, with events picking up from where they left off the same day.
