Despicable Me Director on if There Should Be a Live-Action Minions Movie: ‘God, I Hope Not’

As a devoted fan of the Despicable Me franchise who has eagerly awaited each new installment since 2010, I wholeheartedly agree with Chris Renaud’s sentiments regarding a live-action Minions movie. With his extensive experience working on various films within the series and being instrumental in shaping the beloved characters we know today, it’s clear that Renaud understands the magic that lies in keeping the world of Despicable Me animated. I firmly believe that attempting to bring these wacky, cartoonish creatures to life would not only lose their charm but also diminish the spirit of fun and creativity that has made this franchise so successful.

Despicable Me director Chris Renaud doesn’t think the Minions need a live-action movie.

Previously, Renaud had worked on several movies from the Despicable Me series. He collaborated with Pierre Coffin to co-direct Despicable Me in 2010 and Despicable Me 2 in 2013. More recently, he has taken charge as the sole director for Despicable Me 4, which was released in 2024.

Additionally, he held the role of executive producer for both Minions (2015) and Despicable Me 3 (2017). In 2022, he took up the production duties for Minions: The Rise of Gru.

What did Chris Renaud say about a live-action Minions movie?

As a die-hard Illumination fan, I couldn’t help but wonder aloud during an interview with Film Hounds magazine if there was any chance that the Minions could make the leap from animation to live-action, given Disney’s recent success in adapting their own animated films into live-action masterpieces.

“God, I hope not,” Renaud said. “That’s my answer.”

He went on to say, “To be clear, I’m unaware of such discussions. However, in my view, the essence of the world lies in its ability to let us get away with things we manage to pull off. For instance, confining a minion within a vending machine, or even destroying Gru when he assaults Vector (portrayed by Jason Segel). Such actions are more characteristic of cartoons, like those featuring Bugs Bunny. If you were to bring these concepts to life-action, it would transform into something else entirely. Personally, I find that less appealing. Yet, the future is unpredictable; that’s simply my personal opinion.”

There has been no announcement regarding a live-action Minions or Despicable Me movie at this time.

Meanwhile, it’s worth mentioning that another Minions film is being developed. This one is set to hit theaters in the United States on June 30, 2027. The script for Minions 3 will be penned by Brian Lynch and directed by Coffin, though specific plot details are still kept secret at this stage.

Despicable Me 4 is now available to rent or purchase on digital streaming outlets.
