As a long-time fan of the X-Men franchise, I must express my deep disappointment and concern over the recent developments surrounding Beau DeMayo and his dismissal from X-Men ’97. DeMayo’s work on the revival series was nothing short of exceptional, and it was truly a dream come true for many fans who cherished the original animated series.
X-Men ’97 made its debut on Disney Plus on March 20, 2024, and was met with praise by both critics and viewers. Several seasons have been commissioned, with the second season currently being produced and the third one in the planning stages. However, prior to the show’s premiere, Marvel Studios dismissed the original creator, Beau DeMayo, from his writing role, and later appointed Matthew Chauncey as the writer for Season 3. Months after this event, DeMayo has recently shared his thoughts on his dismissal, which has since prompted a reaction from Marvel.
Beau DeMayo says he was fired from X-Men ’97 over fan art
Recently, Beau DeMayo expressed on his platform (previously known as Twitter) that he was let go from X-Men ’97, a project he spearheaded as a reboot of X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–1997), because he posted an X-Men fan art on Instagram during Pride Month.
DeMayo first expressed his gratitude for being involved with X-Men ’97. Later, he stated that working on the revival series had been a long-held dream for him. He also felt compelled to voice his thoughts after leaving the show, which he shared in an Instagram post accompanied by a screenshot of the original post.
Initially, I’m deeply appreciative for my involvement in #XMen97, working alongside incredibly skilled individuals. Bringing this reboot to life was a long-held aspiration, and the fan response has been heartwarming. Yet, as I’ve moved on from the project, it feels necessary for me to share my thoughts…

DeMayo carried on in his next message, “The above piece is fan-art of X-Men that I shared on Instagram for Pride Month. However, Marvel informed me on June 13th that they had removed my credit for Season 2 due to the post. Regrettably, this incident is another addition to a concerning trend I experienced while working on X-Men ’97 and Blade.”
In the third update, DeMayo shared that he would be temporarily stepping away from social media platforms. He expressed his intention to return with more to share, but felt it necessary to retreat in order to find a more secure environment where he could openly express himself as an out, proud, and nerdy individual. So, keep an eye out for his upcoming posts.
Marvel responds to Beau DeMayo’s allegations
Responding to DeMayo’s claims, a representative from Marvel stated that the termination of DeMayo was the outcome of an in-house probe.
“In March 2024, Mr. DeMayo was let go due to the results of an internal review. The seriousness of the discoveries led us to cut ties with him on the spot, and he is no longer associated with Marvel in any capacity.”

It appears that Deadline’s Marvel sources suggest the studio conducted an investigation due to allegations of sexual misconduct against DeMayo, and the breach of his contractual separation agreement with the company may have resulted in the removal of his credit for the second season.
