Rust Director Opens Up on Shooting, Having ‘No Relationship’ with Alec Baldwin

As a fervent admirer of the cinematic world, I must say that Joel Souza’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary and profoundly poignant. The director’s life-altering experience on the set of “Rust” is a testament to the raw, unpredictable nature of filmmaking and the human spirit’s resilience.

In a recent disclosure, Rust’s film director, Joul Souza, has shared insights about the tragic incident involving a fatal shooting during the movie’s production, described his experiences at that critical moment, and discussed his professional bond with actor Alec Baldwin.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Souza shared details of the unfortunate event for the first time since the 2021 incident involving Alec Baldwin. During this tragic incident, Baldwin accidentally discharged a live bullet that resulted in the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured Souza, who was hit in the shoulder.

“Souza found it strange to have been shot,” he said. “And what’s even more peculiar is who wielded the gun. I had an unusual feeling, something like, ‘Wow, I recall watching The Hunt for Red October in the cinema as a child. It seemed as if my older self was nudging my younger self, saying, ‘Remember that man… one day.'”

“Souza described a peculiar sensation where the entire right side of his body suddenly felt completely numb, yet it also caused an intense, unbearable pain. He likened this experience to feeling both tingly and numb simultaneously while enduring agonizing pain. As a result, he stumbled backwards, ending up either on his knees or bottom, and let out incoherent yells.”

After prolonged court battles, the legal matters stemming from that unfortunate event have been resolved. The first assistant director, Dave Halls, accepted a plea deal for a lesser charge of recklessly handling a dangerous weapon. Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and given a prison sentence of 18 months. Baldwin’s case of involuntary manslaughter was dropped.

Souza details the moments and days after the incident

Souza additionally disclosed that the bullet narrowly missed his lung, leaving him regretting his survival in the time following the event.

Souza shared, “That night, I distinctly recall wishing not to wake up the following day. I hoped for some miracle where I’d lose too much blood overnight and pass away. It was an incredibly tough time. My thoughts were, Perhaps I’ll simply bleed internally – that outcome would be acceptable for me.”

According to Souza, he and Baldwin aren’t particularly close friends but also don’t harbor any animosity towards each other. He stated that their interactions were challenging, but they managed to work together effectively. “We didn’t have a friendship during the process. We didn’t have hostilities either. There was no relationship between us,” Souza explained.

Additionally, he mentioned that the film’s team chose to collaborate on wrapping up the project, with the intention that any profits generated would aid Hutchins’ family financially.

As a gamer, I felt deeply connected to Halyna’s art, and I knew that completing her final movie would bring much-needed financial aid to her family. It might seem trivial to some who aren’t creatively inclined, but her last work is significant. Seeing her last creation mattered immensely, and it was the decisive factor for me in making this project a reality.
