As a gamer who has spent countless hours binge-watching crime dramas, I can confidently say that the absence of a second season for Griselda was a bitter pill to swallow. The first season, with its gripping narrative and Sofia Vergara’s powerhouse performance, left us craving more. However, understanding the constraints of a limited series format has softened the blow a bit.
Regrettably, despite our enthusiasm for another season of Griselda, it seems unlikely as the show was intended as a limited series. The first season comprehensively covered the life story of drug queenpin Griselda Blanco, making a second season redundant. Nevertheless, don’t count out Sofia Vergara and the creative minds behind Griselda just yet.
During a chat with Variety in August 2024, both Vergara and Griselda co-creator Eric Newman shared insights on various topics, including the show’s popularity on Netflix, their collaboration, and prospective future ventures.
Back in January 2024, when Griselda debuted on Netflix, it wasn’t clear whether the series would be successful. Yet, there was a strong suspicion that it would quickly become popular given Vergara’s involvement, and the fact that the creators of the crime drama phenomenon Narcos were overseeing it.
In the end, the limited series garnered generally favorable criticism, often commending Vergara’s exceptional acting. Incredibly, it launched at the top spot in 90 countries during its premiere week and remained in Netflix’s Top 10 for six consecutive weeks. As of August 15th, the show Griselda is currently rated with an 87% Tomatometer score and a 69% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Vergara was nominated for an Emmy in the Lead Actress category for a Limited Series, marking the first time a Latina has been nominated in this category. She could potentially win the award at the upcoming 76th Emmy Awards on September 15. But what’s intriguing is whether Vergara, Newman, and the rest of the Griselda team will collaborate again in future projects. It seems they might.
As per Newman, he along with Vergara are planning to present a brand-new television series to Netflix. While he didn’t reveal many details about the show to Variety, the tidbits he did disclose certainly stirred up our anticipation for it being selected.
