As a seasoned gamer and horror enthusiast who’s been around the block more times than I care to remember, I must say that Cuckoo left me with a mix of emotions. The film’s atmospheric tension and suspense had me on the edge of my seat, reminiscent of those nail-biting moments in Silent Hill or Outlast. Hunter Schafer’s performance as Gretchen was nothing short of captivating, and Dan Stevens’ portrayal of Herr König was downright chilling – a perfect combo for any horror aficionado!

As soon as “Cuckoo” begins, I find myself deeply connecting with the movie’s lead character, Grethen (Hunter Schafer). Following the unfortunate loss of my own mother, I was forced to abandon the comfort of my American home and relocate abroad to live with my long-absent father, Luis (Marton Csokas). It’s clear that our relationship has been strained for years, and my dad seems more engrossed in his seemingly flawless life with his wife, Beth (Jessica Henwick), and their daughter, Alma (Mila Lieu).

At the outset of the film, the family arrives at a serene, remote mountain resort, where Gretchen reluctantly accompanies them. Luis and Beth have relocated here to assist Herr König (portrayed by Dan Stevens), with whom they are collaborating on a construction project. Despite the breathtaking surroundings, this retreat exudes an eerie vibe. After Gretchen begins her work at the retreat, Herr König arranges her shifts to end before sunset. When she persists in cycling home after working night shifts against his wishes, he appears quite insistent on providing her with a ride instead.

The movie “Cuckoo” shines when it keeps viewers guessing about the bizarre and inexplicable events at the resort. A particular scene involving a bicycle had me on the edge of my seat, and the film skillfully builds anticipation with suspense, tension, and mystery. The movie also showcases some original concepts and unsettling visuals, like the eerie character with bulging eyes you might have glimpsed in the trailer. She is genuinely chilling and one of the most unique and frightening villains I’ve encountered this year in horror films. However, as the story unfolds and the backstory is disclosed, the movie doesn’t quite deliver a satisfying conclusion.

As the third act unfolds and explores the reasons behind the peculiar behavior of the alien beings, the storyline gets confusing and overly complex. While it’s not necessary for every aspect to disclose the origin of the antagonistic forces, a more comprehensive explanation could have been beneficial in the case of “Cuckoo”. The viewers are left without understanding how these species came into existence, and some characters lack convincing motivations that can be easily understood by the audience.

In the movie “Cuckoo“, although some aspects might not be entirely convincing, Schafer and Stevens’ outstanding performances keep the audience engaged and curious. This is the fourth time I’ve seen Stevens skillfully adopt a convincing accent, fully immersing himself in it. His captivating yet chilling portrayal of Herr König will leave viewers on edge, as they can never predict when signs of tension might surface in his character’s polished demeanor.

Schafer is currently one of the most promising new talents in Hollywood, and her role in “Cuckoo” serves to highlight her versatility as an actress. Through her portrayal, we see both Gretchen’s heart-wrenching grief and her remarkable resilience. As the film concludes, a poignant family scene beautifully displays Gretchen’s devotion and protective nature. Schafer masterfully navigates the intricacies and depth of her character.

As a gamer, I was recently approached by a colleague from the theater about their thoughts on the movie “Cuckoo”. They had watched it last night and mentioned that they found the narrative quite complex to grasp. Based on the feedback I’ve heard, this seems to be a common issue among viewers. Although the film showcases daring ideas, chilling visuals, and commendable acting, the logic and rationale behind the lore and characters‘ intentions were unclear, leaving many questions unanswered and the ending unsatisfying.
