The Umbrella Academy series finale ending explained: What happened to the siblings?

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for intricate narratives and parallel universes, I must admit that The Umbrella Academy series finale left me utterly spellbound. It was like playing through an epic RPG, where every character has their unique abilities, intertwining stories, and the stakes are as high as they come – the fate of multiple realities hanging in the balance.

Regarding The Umbrella Academy series finale, it’s clear that different perspectives have emerged about its quality. However, one thing that everyone can agree on is that it represents a conclusion to the story – there’s no possibility of returning or continuing beyond this point.

As a gamer, I found myself stepping back into the world of my favorite characters six years after they’d left it behind. For me, that meant Viktor was tending bar up north in Canada, Luther was shaking his stuff on stage as a male entertainer, Alison was chasing her dreams in acting, Ben had moved in with her and was still living in the basement, Diego and Lila were raising their own little brood, Five was deep undercover with the CIA, and Ben was just getting out of lock-up. Quite a change from their superpowered lives!

It’s evident that each has chosen their own path, yet they make an effort to reunite as a family occasionally. They hold differing opinions about their regular lives, only to be drawn once more into a catastrophic scenario – this one being the final apocalypse.

Ben and Jennifer are the end of the world in The Umbrella Academy

As a gamer, I’m all for a process we call “The Cleanse.” It’s an idea that many gamers, including myself (Jean and Gene), are rooting for. We aren’t the only ones who want this refresh; it seems like there’s a growing community of us with the same vision.

Jean and Gene discovered that objects originating from various realities are scattered throughout this cosmos. These items aren’t exclusive to a single universe; instead, Five uncovers that these artifacts hail from numerous universes which the Hargreeves siblings have created as defensive measures against consecutive apocalypses. Interestingly, it was Five who established the time regulation agency with the aim of preventing such catastrophes from recurring in the future.

That didn’t work. The Cleanse needs to happen to put the timeline back in good standing.

Ben died to prevent the Cleanse in the first place

As I found myself gripped by this ominous red force, potentially spelling doom for our world, I realized we had to delve into our shared memories once more, trying to unravel the mystery of how my original self met his end in the first place. Turns out, it was during a mission when young Jennifer crossed paths with me. My father, Reggie, had strictly warned us not to mess with a certain sealed-off section – that’s where Jennifer was hidden away. If any of us Hargreeves touched her, The Cleanse would be triggered, and my dad wasn’t keen on setting that off.

In a different twist, Reginald took the life of both Ben and Jennifer with the intention of avoiding such events. Yet, strangely enough, Jennifer appeared again, but this time as a squid, within the peculiar world of The Umbrella Academy. It seems history tends to mirror itself in this unique series.

Reginald made every effort to stop The Cleanse from occurring. However, someone near him was working against him in this endeavor. His wife was a key proponent of The Cleanse. She had previously destroyed their planet with marigold, and now felt compelled to rectify the damage by eliminating all traces of marigold. If this didn’t occur, another universe might be born as a result.

The Hargreeves make a sacrificial choice in The Umbrella Academy series finale

The Hargreeves siblings understood that their deaths were necessary to halt further development of alternate realities. Initially, Diego escorted Lila and Claire, Allison’s daughter, to a subway system meant to transport them to another existence. Five emphasized that if the marigold was not entirely destroyed, everything would restart, rendering their efforts meaningless. However, Diego and Lila showed little concern about this prospect.

In the final moments, I chose not to board the train. My kids might not recall me, but they’d have their grandparents to guide them instead. I knew they’d be in good hands.

In summary, after the six Hargreeves siblings and Lila chose to merge with Ben and Jennifer’s transformed form (the beast), we transitioned to a new world where the Hargreeves siblings were no longer present. Scenes showed familiar characters like The Handler living ordinary lives. The only remnants of the Hargreeves family were seven marigold flowers that bloomed near a tree, symbolizing that their story had concluded.
