As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating through multiple Marvel realms, I can confidently tell you that Kraven the Hunter is not MCU canon, but rather a part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). This might seem confusing given the plethora of Marvel universes we’ve grown accustomed to over the years.
With Kraven the Hunter set to hit theaters in December, some enthusiastic viewers might be curious about whether this new film exists within the MCU, a separate universe, or Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). Given the existence of various Marvel franchises such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Amazing Spider-Man Universe, and the Fox X-Men universe, it’s understandable that fans may feel puzzled.
So, in which universe is Kraven the Hunter set? Here’s your answer.
Is Kraven the Hunter MCU Canon?
No, Kraven the Hunter is not MCU canon. It is set in the SSU, or Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
Tom Hardy’s Venom films and Jared Leto’s Morbius take place within the same cinematic universe as each other, referred to as the SSU. In contrast, Kraven the Hunter belongs to the Marvel Cinematic Universe multiverse. This connection was forged in Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In both movies, Tom Hardy’s characters Eddie Brock and Venom entered and departed from the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Doctor Strange cast a chaotic memory-erasing spell. It’s worth noting that before departing, Hardy’s Venom character left behind a fragment of the Venom symbiote in the MCU.
The interconnectedness of the MCU and Secret Sorcerers Universe was once more presented in a seemingly nonsensical fashion in the poorly received mid and post-credit sequences of Morbius. Here, Michael Keaton’s Vulture – a character originating from the MCU who made his debut in Spider-Man: Homecoming – mysteriously appeared within the SSU through Doctor Strange’s incantation. In these scenes, he was depicted pursuing Jared Leto’s Morbius with the intention of forging an alliance.
Actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who plays Kraven the Hunter’s lead role, was previously part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) from 2014 to 2015. During this period, he appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron as Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver. In the latter film, his character, Quicksilver, died in the final battle against Ultron at the end of the movie.
Kraven the Hunter is scheduled to be released on December 13, 2024.
