As a long-time fan of the Alien franchise who has eagerly awaited each new installment with bated breath, I must say that the early reactions to Alien: Romulus have me absolutely thrilled! Having grown up watching Ridley Scott’s original masterpiece and being captivated by its terrifying xenomorph, I can honestly say that the creature design in this latest film sounds nothing short of breathtaking.

As a die-hard gamer, I’ve finally gotten my hands on the long-awaited Alien: Romulus, and let me tell you, it’s been nothing short of fantastic! Fedê Álvarez has truly outdone himself with this directorial masterpiece, marking the seventh installment in the iconic Alien series. Interestingly enough, it’s the first film since 1997’s Alien Resurrection not to be helmed by Ridley Scott, who previously directed the first, fifth, and sixth movies.

Critics hail Alien: Romulus’ creature design ahead of theatrical debut

On Friday, August 16, 2024, the alien film titled “Romulus” will be premiering in U.S. cinemas. Following a private viewing for the press, initial responses have been remarkably positive.

Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter praised Alien: Romulus as the top film of the summer. He wrote on X (previously known as Twitter), “ALIEN: ROMULUS offers all the classic elements you’d expect in an Alien movie, yet it avoids feeling like a mere tribute to nostalgia or fan service… and even takes a daringly fresh approach.” He concluded by stating, “Fede Alvarez [the director] and the cast have created the summer’s finest film.”

In the film, Leo Rydel commended the horror aspects, visuals, and xenomorph construction. He exclaimed, “There’s so much to appreciate, with terrifying horror scenes, vivid imagery, and stunning creature creation! David Jonsson really shines.” He added his thoughts on Twitter: “While it skillfully brings together the finest elements of the series, the characters aren’t particularly memorable.”

Matt Neglia from Next Best Picture commended the film’s focus on its horror roots. However, he noted that it seemed shallow at times and contained excessive scenes catering to fans. Nevertheless, Neglia appreciated the outstanding performances of the main actors, pointing out how they effectively maintained audience engagement. In his review, Neglia stated, “ALIEN: ROMULUS is a nail-biting, intense horror journey that gradually builds momentum until it leaves you breathless by the finale.”

Neglia also commented, “It lacks any substantial thematic development and seems overly filled with references, homages, and fan service that it appears more like a compilation of popular moments than an attempt to offer anything original or thought-provoking. However, the convincing portrayals by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson give the story enough emotional depth to maintain audience engagement amidst the violence. This installment undoubtedly stands out as the most straightforward within the series.”

Apart from this, Sean Tajipour from Nerdtropolis called the movie “Alien: Romulus” the “sci-fi horror masterpiece we’ve been eagerly anticipating.” He further stated, “@fedalvar [Alvarez] has skillfully returned the franchise to its foundations with a truly spine-chilling approach. Each moment is nail-biting suspense and delivers everything you’d hope for in an Alien movie, plus more. In my opinion, it’s the best Alien film in years! I strongly recommend watching it in IMAX!”

The initial responses to Alien: Romulus indicate a promising beginning, but it is only on its theatrical debut this Friday that the film will truly be put to the test.
