As a seasoned traveler and avid reader, I must say that Noue Kirwan’s “Frequent Fliers” has managed to captivate me in a way few books have. Having traversed the skies myself countless times for work and pleasure, I found the premise of two strangers meeting on a flight intriguingly relatable.
On occasion, diving into a book without any prior knowledge can yield the most rewarding experience, which is exactly what I did when reading “Frequent Fliers” by Noue Kirwan.
For those unaware, “Frequent Fliers” represents Kirwan’s second novel, with her initial publication being “Long Past Summer”. Regardless of whether you’ve read her previous work or not, this cover undeniably stands out.
As a passionate reader, the captivating cover initially drew me in, yet I must admit my knowledge about this book was rather limited before diving into it. All I knew was that it followed two individuals who always seemed to be on the same flights. However, what unfolded was far beyond my expectations – this book turned out to be a rich, multifaceted tale that transcended the initial premise.
Delighted to express my gratitude to Canary Street Press! They graciously provided me with an Advanced Reader Copy, enabling me to dive in ahead of time and eagerly share my insights with everyone here.
Frequent Fliers will have you ready to book a flight to England.
Title Character, Melanie (or Lanie), embarks on a journey to attend her cousin’s engagement party in England. However, before she even boards the plane, she encounters an unpleasant individual, who unfortunately ends up seated next to her. As one could anticipate, this unwanted encounter begins their trip on a sour note. Yet, despite their rocky introduction, they engage in conversation and manage to pass the time enjoyably, surprising both of them.
Lanie reveals to him that despite appearances, she’s not entirely thrilled about her cousin and best friend getting engaged. Soon we discover that Lanie harbors feelings for Jonah and feels more pain than she cares to admit. The situation grows complex when she gets close to Jonah, becoming his ‘best mate’ and her maid of honor at the wedding.
Simultaneously, Lanie often shares a seat with Ridley during her business trips. Given that they’re both working on the wedding plans, they keep crossing paths. Spending so much time together, their feelings gradually deepen in what appears to be a developing romance, albeit at a slow pace.
I found myself captivated by the multifaceted nature of “Frequent Fliers,” as both Ridley and Lanie are richly developed characters. Ridley, a single father grappling with the loss of his wife, is simultaneously attempting to raise his daughter while dealing with custody matters – a challenging task indeed. On the other hand, Lanie harbors intricate emotions regarding Jonah and Gemma’s relationship, all while navigating her own family problems, making career decisions, and coordinating a wedding. Quite simply, these characters are juggling a lot!
As a seasoned reader with a penchant for thrilling narratives, I found “Frequent Fliers” to be a captivating read that delved into well-trodden territory in its third act but managed to keep me glued to the pages due to its dramatic intensity. The novel also boasted some steamy scenes that added an extra layer of excitement. However, I must admit that the book was a bit lengthy for my personal preferences. Nonetheless, for those seeking a lengthy read to pass the time during their vacation, “Frequent Fliers” would undoubtedly prove to be a satisfying choice.
