As a long-time fan of gripping television shows with a knack for unconventional storytelling, I can wholeheartedly recommend the following series that have recently caught my eye.
As a long-time fan of both Netflix and AMC, I’m absolutely thrilled about the upcoming collaboration between these two powerhouses. With August just around the corner, I can hardly contain my excitement as they are set to release an impressive array of programs on the 19th. With such a rich selection to choose from, I thought I’d share some recommendations for shows that truly stood out to me based on my personal viewing preferences and experiences.
For quite some time, AMC has been recognized for its exceptional original series, ranging from “Mad Men” to “Breaking Bad”, several of which have earned Emmy awards. This network offers a wide variety, encompassing both drama and action genres. With a recent agreement with Netflix, approximately a dozen of their shows are now available on the streaming platform. Some might find a few of these series worth watching, despite occasional inconsistencies (such as “Mayfair Witches”), while others may be less familiar.
Although there are numerous excellent shows available, I would recommend giving these six series a watch. They demonstrate the impressive lineup of AMC shows on Netflix, making it a must-see for any streaming enthusiast.
Interview with the Vampire
In a new adaptation, AMC brings Anne Rice’s renowned work, “Interview with the Vampire,” to life more authentically than previous attempts like the 1994 film featuring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. This version, set in 1910 instead of the 1790s, follows young Louis (Jacob Anderson) as he encounters the alluring vampire Lestat (Sam Reid), who transforms him into a creature of the night. The narrative unfolds with Louis recounting his story to a captivated reporter (Eric Bogosian) in the 1970s.
The series retains the novel’s dark and gritty tones as well as the unlikely romantic bond of the two leads. There’s also Claudia (Bailey Bass), a young vampire older than she looks. The gothic setting and wonderful production aid the show and make this a fantastic adaptation that is well worth checking out for both Rice fans and newcomers.
Dark Winds
After years of attempts, Tony Hillerman’s best-selling novels come to life in this show. It centers on his two most popular characters, Navajo Tribal Police officers Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon). The pair work together in the 1970s Southwest on what looks like a standard robbery case, only for it to transform into a strange affair with multiple twists and turns.
Season 2 takes on the pursuit of a serial killer, skillfully integrating the historical backdrop. It delves into themes such as Native American culture, prejudice, and hints of supernatural elements. The two main characters deliver outstanding performances. Given that each season consists of just six episodes, it’s easy to binge-watch without feeling overwhelmed by a drawn-out narrative, making it all the more compelling. With a third season on the way, now is the perfect moment to jump into this underrated yet gripping crime series.
Fear The Walking Dead
The standout TWD spinoff starts off by revealing an aspect unexplored in the original series – the initial onset of the zombie apocalypse. A troubled mix of family members must flee a Los Angeles swarming with walkers and strive to stay alive. As the seasons progress, the danger from walkers escalates, but it’s the gradual disintegration of civilization under the strain of the undead that truly drives the show.
As the series progresses, you’ll find it increasingly engaging, with some familiar characters from “The Walking Dead” making appearances, such as Lennie James portraying Morgan. The acting talent is exceptional, featuring Kim Dickens, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Frank Dillane, Colman Domingo, and many others. However, be warned that, much like the main “The Walking Dead” series, strong emotional bonds can be broken as unexpected character deaths are common. The exploration of the “The Walking Dead” universe is skillfully executed, making it worthwhile to watch all eight seasons and understand why this franchise has been so successful.
Kevin Can F— Himself
Occasionally, a TV series boldly decides to challenge conventional norms as an experiment. The intriguing narrative opens with Kevin (Eric Petersen), a man so self-absorbed that he perceives the world through the lens of a network sitcom in which he plays the role of the bumbling yet endearing husband to his long-suffering wife Allison (Annie Murphy). At first glance, it appears to air on CBS with a live audience and corny humor. However, whenever Kevin is off-screen, the show transitions into a grittier single-camera format focusing on Allison navigating life with this self-centered individual.
As someone who has spent countless hours binge-watching sitcoms and analyzing their tropes, I find this series to be a breath of fresh air. It deconstructs the stereotypical elements of sitcoms in an engaging way, showing us that married life isn’t always filled with laughter, and that some people will go to extreme lengths to make quick money. The performance by Murphy is nothing short of remarkable, as he navigates through the complex web of relationships and shifting between different “shows” seamlessly.
Gangs of London
As a long-time fan of gripping British dramas, I can confidently say that this latest offering is one of the boldest crime shows I’ve seen in a while. Having spent many years working in law enforcement, I’ve seen my fair share of underworld intrigue, but the storyline in this series really stands out.
As a devoted viewer, I must say that this series is unlike any other I’ve seen. The action is so intense, it feels like watching a high-stakes movie unfold right before my eyes. There are bone-crushing fights and deceit around every corner – you never know who to trust! As the tension mounts, our protagonist finds themselves navigating through a shadowy realm that’s both thrilling and chilling. It’s an adrenaline rush like no other, with two seasons jam-packed with crime action that would make several shows combined pale in comparison. Simply put, it’s a wildly entertaining rollercoaster ride you don’t want to miss!
Monsieur Spade
For over half a century, the hard-boiled private investigator, Sam Spade, initially portrayed by Dashiell Hammett, has remained a beloved character among movie producers. The latest actor to assume this role is Clive Owen, in a fresh and innovative interpretation. In this version, set during the 1960s, we find Spade having retired from his tumultuous career and relocated to the tranquil south of France for a peaceful retirement. However, his quiet life is disrupted when six nuns are viciously murdered, and he finds himself drawn back into the investigation.
In this rendition, Owen delivers an exceptional portrayal of a more seasoned Spade, subtly conveying a sense of weariness while simultaneously exuding a renewed vitality. The storyline presents a grittier perspective, blending elements of the supernatural with a solid foundation rooted in traditional Spade narratives. For both longtime and recent fans, it serves as a testament to the enduring excellence of the Spade character.
