SEAL Team: How Did Clay Die? Why Did Max Thieriot Leave?

As a dedicated fan who’s been following this gripping series since its inception, I must say, the departure of Clay Spenser (played by Max Thieriot) left me with a heavy heart. The way his character met his untimely end in Season 6 was both unexpected and heart-wrenching. His selfless act to save a fellow veteran while sacrificing his own life was truly heroic, but I can’t help but feel that it was too soon for him to go.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve dived into the latest season of “SEAL Team,” and it feels like we’re venturing into uncharted waters with Jason Hayes and Bravo Team. This time, they’re grappling with a new era of conflict against fresh adversaries. The buzz around Season 7 is palpable, yet the departure of Clay Spenser, played by Max Thieriot, in the last season has left fans like me still reeling. So, I can’t help but wonder, how exactly did Clay meet his end in “SEAL Team”? And, with bated breath, are there any chances we might see Thieriot rejoin the cast?

Get acquainted with the development of Clay Spenser’s character, along with speculations about his possible return in the concluding seventh season of SEAL Team.

When and how did Max Thieriot’s Clay Spenser die on SEAL Team?

Played by Max Thieriot, Clay Spenser was shot dead in Season 6 Episode 8 while rescuing a veteran.

In the last instance of his life, Clay is spotted assisting an elderly war veteran named Ben. He makes a valiant effort to stop Ben from committing suicide and sabotaging a military recruitment center. Despite saving Ben, a security officer encounters him with a gun in hand and fires at him, hitting his chest. The circumstances surrounding his death add to the poignancy, as Clay had intended to spend quality time with his family after resigning from his job.

Despite Max Thieriot’s busy schedule, his character getting killed on the show was partly due to his absence. He was simultaneously working on another series, Fire Country, where he serves as executive producer and co-creator. In an interview with Collider, Thieriot shared his challenges in juggling both projects, as he was deeply invested in SEAL Team. Furthermore, Spencer Hudnut, the showrunner of SEAL Team, confirmed to TV Line that Clay Spenser was written off during the sixth season.

Hudnut explained, “There were doubts about whether Max would return for Season 6, which influenced the cliffhanger in Season 5. As Fire Country progressed through each development milestone, it became increasingly apparent that we might be saying goodbye to Max at some point… Despite discussions suggesting he could handle both shows, it was obvious that wasn’t feasible.”

Additionally, it’s worth noting that unlike SEAL Team and Fire Country, the filming sites were distinct. Given this, it seems logical that the producers decided to conclude Max Thieriot’s character arc during Season 6.

Will Max Thieriot return as Clay Spenser in SEAL Team Season 7?

I’m sorry to say that Max Thieriot won’t make a comeback in SEAL Team Season 7 because his character met its end in the previous season.

1. Despite whispers about Thieriot returning to the show, his participation was never formally announced. In addition, as Clay navigates his journey on the series, the creators aim to emphasize the self-sacrifices of military officers. Conversely, Season 7 will introduce Raffi Barsoumian as Omar Hamza, taking over the role previously played by Clay.

After the tragic demise of my character, Clay, I find myself embarking on a fresh adventure with the SEAL Team as we approach our final season. The talented ensemble, comprising J. Buckley, David Boreanaz, Dylan Wash, Neil Brown Jr., and Beau Knapp, will lead us through this concluding chapter of our military storyline.

Viewers can watch new episodes of SEAL Team Season 7 on Paramount Plus dropping every Sunday.
