Big L: Borderlands Set To Become One Of The Worst Reviewed Video Game Movies Of All Time

As a seasoned gamer who’s been through the highs and lows of video game adaptations, I must say, the Borderlands movie news has left me feeling more like a Vault Hunter facing a never-ending wave of bandit attacks than ever before. With an impressive roster of talent behind it, one would expect nothing short of a stellar performance, but alas, the early reviews have painted a rather dismal picture.

It seems that Borderlands may end up as the most criticized video game film ever made. This genre appears to be particularly doomed in this instance.

Worse Than The Far Cry Movie

As I type this, the game “Borderlands” holds a score of 29 out of 100 on Metacritic. This places it somewhere between the 2015 release of “Hitman: Agent 47” and “Silent Hill” from 2006. Currently ranked as the 11th worst video game adaptation on Metacritic, we suspect it may slide further down the list.

As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours sifting through the cinematic landscape, I can confidently say that the current Tomatometer rating of 6% for this movie leaves me feeling as desolate as a wanderer lost in a barren wasteland. It’s rare to find a movie that fails to resonate with both critics and audiences alike, but based on the reviews I’ve read, it seems this film has fallen far short of the mark.

What Went Wrong?

According to the reviews, it’s evident that the story revolves around Lilith (played by Cate Blanchett), who is on a quest to locate the lost daughter of Atlas in order to unlock one of Pandora’s renowned Vaults. To achieve this, she assembles a team of unlikely allies.

The game’s story might not be particularly compelling, but it’s the captivating characters and the grimly humorous environment that make the game truly exceptional – elements sadly missing from the film adaptation.

As IGN says:

Eli Roth is no James Gunn, and this film has none of the lovable lunatics, awe-striking sci-fi visuals, and out-of-this-world storytelling of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

And what is Borderlands without the lunatics? Just an empty desert.

One significant aspect is the choice of actors. With Cate Blanchett, a two-time Academy Award winner, Jami Lee Curtis, an Oscar recipient, James Black, and Kevin Hart, all seasoned performers, it seems unlikely they would botch this production. Some suggest that perhaps these specific roles weren’t ideal for them. Critics are pointing out that the casting was a major misstep, which is troubling given the film revolves around a band of humorously eccentric characters. This casting choice doesn’t align well with the premise of a comedy about misfits.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how the film works out for ourselves.

How do you feel now? Are you still as enthusiastic about the Borderlands film, or did the criticism in some of the recent reviews dampen your initial excitement?
