Ethereum Co-founder Vitalik Buterin Transfers $8M in ETH to New Wallet

As a researcher and follower of the crypto industry, I find it inspiring to witness figures like Vitalik Buterin using their resources for noble causes. With his significant contributions to various charitable organizations, Buterin has consistently demonstrated his commitment to making a positive impact on society.

Vitalik Buterin, a key figure in the cryptocurrency world and co-founder of Ethereum, recently transferred approximately $8 million in ETH to a fresh wallet. This action has led to conjecture that he might be planning a charitable donation. In the past, large sums of Ethereum have been moved by Buterin to various wallets, many of which were later discovered to be contributions towards charities and worthy causes.

Based on the recent transaction of 3,000 ETH (valued around $8 million), Lookonchain speculates that it might be a potential donation. The digital assets were transferred to a multi-signature wallet, which Lookonchain hypothesizes could be associated with an undisclosed charitable entity.

$1 Billion Donation to Support Pandemic Heroes

Apart from the 3,000 Ether, it was also noticed that the individual moved approximately 200 Ether, equivalent to around $534,000, to the address 0xEBb7…eB89, as identified by blockchain security firm PeckShield.

It’s uncertain if the funds are for charity, as proposed by Lookonchain; however, the co-founder of Ethereum began giving substantial donations to charities starting from May 2021.

In that particular moment, he transferred approximately a billion dollars’ worth of assorted cryptocurrencies to a charitable effort called the Indian Covid-Crypto Relief Fund, which was set up to aid individuals impacted by the pandemic.

As a seasoned entrepreneur myself, I am always inspired by stories of individuals who turn their dreams into reality. One such individual is Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon, who founded an initiative in the same year that he himself funded with a million dollars. His courage and determination to make a difference are truly commendable. I can relate to his journey as I too have faced challenges in my entrepreneurial ventures but have always persevered and learned from each experience. Sandeep’s story serves as a reminder that with passion, persistence, and the willingness to take risks, one can make a significant impact on the world. Kudos to him for his vision and tenacity!

In the year 2023, Vitalik Buterin furthered his charitable endeavors by donating an extra sum towards ongoing research projects focused on the virus. A total of $100 million was set aside for this research, with Buterin adding an additional $10 million to initiate the project.

As he explains, these funds are intended for research focused on enhancing indoor air quality as a means to curb the transmission of the coronavirus, as well as exploring strategies to lessen the lasting impact of the virus.

Buterin Donates to Open-Source Initiatives

Apart from his involvement in pandemic aid, Vitalik Buterin has significantly contributed to open-source initiatives as well. On May 12, 2021, Gitcoin, an open-source bug bounty platform, publicly acknowledged a “generous donation” of around $5 million from Buterin. This contribution was in the form of roughly 49 trillion Akita Inu tokens (AKITA) that were sent to Gitcoin’s wallet address.

Furthermore, Buterin transferred approximately $441 million in value of the same digital asset to Gitcoin, aiming to bolster their efforts in enhancing security across the cryptocurrency sector.

Recently, Buterin generously contributed 100 Ether to the 2077 Collective, a community dedicated to bolstering the Ethereum blockchain and its influence in the industry. This creative collective, consisting of researchers, developers, marketers, aims to develop groundbreaking projects that will help reignite enthusiasm for Ethereum.

Simultaneously, the co-creator of Ethereum isn’t the only one engaging in philanthropy. As per statistics from The Giving Block, cryptocurrency donations hit a peak in 2022, amounting to $125 million given to numerous charities.

Over the next ten years, it’s anticipated that the value of cryptocurrency donations to the company may exceed $10 billion.
