As a seasoned veteran of mecha combat games, I can confidently say that Mecha Break by Amazing Seasun Games has struck a resounding chord with my inner armored warrior. The game feels like it was crafted for those who’ve spent countless hours perfecting their piloting skills in faster-paced Armored Core titles, but decided to add a dash of class-based mechanics and an array of game modes to keep things fresh.
At times, a game can satisfy an unacknowledged desire within you. That’s exactly how I feel about Mecha Break by Amazing Seasun Games. It’s as if the developers had a go at faster-paced games like Armored Core, found themselves enjoying them immensely, and thought, “why don’t we create something similar, but introduce class systems and expand on the game modes?”
Following your personalization of your pilot character, you can create a towering muscle-bound man or a woman whose physique would leave Bayonetta embarrassed, and then you’re plunged into a brief tutorial mission that sets the stage for Mecha Break’s narrative. The specifics such as who, what, where, when, and why aren’t crucial – you’re under attack, there are mechs involved, but you also possess a mech, and it’s time to turn their predicament into your advantage. As described by Amazing Seasun Games, each pilot in Mecha Break has their unique story; you start off with several choices, and from there, you customize them further. However, during my experience with the beta so far, I haven’t seen much beyond that initial mission. Nevertheless, the way this first mission is presented is impressive, so if there are more missions like it, I’m ready to join in.
If you’ve dabbled in any Armored Core game since Armored Core 4, Mecha Break will feel familiar to you. You’ll notice that there are two types of boots – one for soaring high and the other for evading and swiftly maneuvering. The rest of the controls correspond with your mech’s weapons. Initially, you’ll wield the Alysnes, a moderately built model equipped with an autocannon, shield, halberd for close quarters combat, and a pair of gauss cannons. What sets the Alysnes apart is its ability to summon a resupply if it loses armor in battle, a feature that can tip the scales between winning and losing.
Instantly, I resonated with the Alysnes, yet if you’re seeking something unique, there’s a variety of mechs available. For instance, the Tricera transforms into a fortified artillery platform, ideal for defending objectives. The Skyraider morphs into an aircraft, while the Panther excels in close combat with its shields and lance, protected by an array of defenses. The Welkin, on the other hand, is a heavy-hitting mech equipped with a howitzer, battleaxe, drone, and stasis field, capable of warding off enemy fire and trapping unlucky adversaries inside. There are many more options to explore as well.
In the game Mecha Break, each mechanical unit isn’t limited to a fixed arsenal. Instead, you have the freedom to tailor their weapons and enhance their internal components with mods. This modification system allows you to boost specific stats at the expense of others. As a result, every mech I’ve encountered in this game feels unique, compelling me to adapt my strategies based on their distinct strengths and vulnerabilities. That’s truly impressive!
The thrill of Mecha Break lies in its gameplay. It’s a fast-paced game where one mistake could be fatal, yet it acknowledges the fact that you’re controlling a massive war machine. Each swing of your halberd commits you to that animation until your mech recovers. If your opponent manages a well-timed dodge, leaving you swinging at thin air, they’ll certainly make you pay for it. To emerge victorious, you’ll need quick reflexes, strategic thinking, and smart decisions. Winning in Mecha Break is an amazing feeling, and losing to someone who outplays you will be a clear lesson. As a fan of multiplayer games that reward skill, Mecha Break satisfies a craving I didn’t realize was still there. And oh, does it feel satisfying when it scratches that itch!
Regarding the exciting aspects of Mecha Break, I was quite impressed by the variety of game modes available. While there’s the conventional “destroy enemy mechs” mode, there are also team-based objectives such as capturing points in a king of the hill style, outright destruction, escorting vehicles to their destinations, and more. Each mech comes with its own set of challenges, ensuring a wealth of activities. Moreover, based on the game menus, it seems there’s more content on the way. What makes it even better is that every experience I’ve had in Mecha Break has been enjoyable. This enjoyment stems from the fact that Amazing Seasun Games appears to have perfected the core gameplay, and also because the activities aren’t repetitive.
My main issue is the abundance of lootboxes, battle pass elements, and so forth, which seem necessary to obtain new mods, paint options, and similar items. While it’s nice that you can open many of these simultaneously, avoiding the frequent dopamine-triggering animations meant to keep players addicted, I find myself tolerating such features when a game offers such an enjoyable playing experience.
At times, you encounter a game that seems tailor-made for your preferences. So far, Mecha Break appears to be that game designed specifically with me in mind. It’s a game for those who crave customization, demand quick and responsive gameplay, and are prepared to face the consequences of their decisions. The game already shows signs of a steep learning curve from the outset. I had to pause my playtesting just to put this into words, but once this is done, I’m diving right back in. I still have a craving for more, and it needs to be satisfied. In other words, I’ll be strapping myself back into the cockpit.
