As a fan who has grown up watching Sally Field and Robin Williams, their bond in Mrs. Doubtfire holds a special place in my heart. However, it’s not just their on-screen chemistry that stands out; it’s the off-screen kindness and empathy that Robin displayed towards Sally during a difficult time.
Sally Field recently shared a heartfelt story about working with Robin Williams on Mrs. Doubtfire.
How Did Robin Williams Help Sally Field on Mrs. Doubtfire?
For the 10th anniversary of Robin Williams’ passing on August 11, Vanity Fair reached out to 20 of his friends, co-stars, and colleagues to reminisce about the beloved comedian. During the filming of Mrs. Doubtfire, Field experienced a heartbreaking loss when her father passed away due to a stroke. She shared a touching story of how Williams provided comfort and support during that difficult time.
In an unprecedented conversation with Vanity Fair, Field revealed a tale untold before. One fateful day, while we were filming the divorce scene outside the courtroom, my father suffered a stroke and passed away. I received a call from the doctor informing me about his demise. He inquired if I wanted them to attempt resuscitation. I declined, as that was not my father’s wish. Instead, I requested them to tell him, “Sally says goodbye.” Needless to say, I was deeply affected by this tragic event.
Rather than insisting on departing from the project, Field made an effort to press on. Nevertheless, Williams sensed there was a problem and went over to talk to his fellow actor. What followed then showcased Williams’ remarkable compassion and understanding.
“Upon arriving on set, I gave it my best effort to perform, Field explained. “I wasn’t emotionally distressed. Robin approached me, led me off the set, and inquired, ‘Are you alright?’ To which I responded, ‘Yes, why do you ask?’ He then said, ‘I don’t know, I was just wondering.’ ‘No, I’m not, Robin. My father has just passed away,’ I told him. ‘Oh my goodness, we need to get you home immediately.’ And he ensured it happened – the rest of the day’s shooting went on around me. I could then return home, call my brother, and organize things.”
Field added, “It’s a side of Robin that people rarely knew: He was very sensitive and intuitive.”
In 1993, Mrs. Doubtfire ranked as the second most profitable movie, earning an impressive $441.3 million globally while being made with only a $25 million investment.
