As a long-time fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant and chaotic world of Borderlands, I must confess that my anticipation for this movie was palpable. The games have been an integral part of my gaming journey, offering me endless hours of fun, camaraderie, and a unique blend of humor, action, and adventure.
The action-packed film “Borderlands” had its debut at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on August 6th, and it is set to hit cinemas across the U.S. and worldwide on August 9th. Unfortunately, the unfavorable reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic suggest a challenging start for this movie.
Borderlands’ reviews call it ‘abysmal,’ ‘unwatchable,’ and a ‘disaster’
As I type this, the video game Borderlands is currently receiving harsh criticism with a zero-star rating from 23 critics on Rotten Tomatoes. On Metacritic, where scores are averaged using a weighted system, it has earned a score of 32 out of 100 after 10 reviews, suggesting a predominantly negative response.
ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim criticizes Borderlands, calling it “nearly unwatchable.” He further states that while it might not be the worst blockbuster of the year (with Madame Web holding that title), it falls short significantly in terms of providing entertainment.
Movie critic Matt Donato described it as a disheartening squandering of a beloved franchise (the Borderlands movie, which is based on the video game series by Gearbox Software). He stated that instead of keeping the eccentric group of violent misfits vibrant and exciting, they sucked the life out of their initial journey together.
Adriano Caporusso from Bitesize Breakdown described the movie “Borderlands” as a “disaster.” He further criticized it by saying that it is loaded with tired cliches, and instead of keeping the chaos and creativity found in the video game series, it offers a dull, unfunny, and visually unappealing film. The characters are annoying, and the cast lacks any kind of chemistry together, as stated on X (previously known as Twitter).
According to Clarisse Loughrey from The Independent, Borderlands was a complete catastrophe, and she cautioned her readers that the movie could leave them wary about upcoming video game adaptations.
Despite a majority of unfavorable feedback, the film Borderlands has garnered a handful of positive reviews. For example, Tatiana Hullender from Screen Rant commended Cate Blanchett’s portrayal of Lilith and observed that director Roth is aiming for authenticity in creating the game world’s atmosphere, and it should be noted that the movie successfully captures the essence of the Borderlands game series.
As the movie is released globally, it’s expected to gather various critic responses. Given the existing pattern, improvements may not be forthcoming.
