House of the Dragon spoilers: What happened to Silver Denys in Fire & Blood?

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for epic sagas like Game of Thrones, I must confess my disappointment with the divergence from George R.R. Martin’s original narrative in House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 7. It’s as if they’re playing a game of Whispering Woods and someone just moved the dragon I was about to claim!

In House of the Dragon’s Season 2, Episode 7, Rhaenyra swiftly eliminated several of the Targaryen offspring who were not legitimate, in her quest to find a dragon rider. Among those eliminated was Silver Denys, one of the Targaryens.

It’s alright if you didn’t catch it; many people learned about Silver Denys from social media because his character wasn’t explicitly mentioned in the series, and the narrative deviated from the book’s plot.

In the books, Denys Silver was among those attempting to lay claim to the dragon Vermithor at Dragonstone. However, it’s not actually Denys who seeks the dragon; it is another character in the story.

Silver Denys goes after Sheepstealer in Fire & Blood

In Fire & Blood, it’s not like Rhaenyra summoned everyone to Dragonstone and invited a free-for-all dragon claiming session involving Vermithor. Nope, instead, she made it clear that she was looking for those who carry the Targaryen lineage to try their luck with dragons.

Three ferocious dragons roam the lands of Westeros: the Phantom Grey, the Thief of Sheep, and the Carnivorous One. It’s the latter pair, the Carnivorous One and the Thief of Sheep, that play a part in Silver Denys’ narrative.

In our tale, Denys pursues Sheepstealer, a ferocious dragon residing near the Vale. It’s quite possible you’ve already encountered this dragon in “House of the Dragon.” This particular dragon is the one Rhaena encounters towards the end of the second season, although their encounter isn’t described in the books.

In this scenario, a thief named Sheepstealer violently removes Denys’s arm. As his sons desperately try to stop the bleeding, a ruthless figure known as Cannibal suddenly appears and slays them all. This grim sequence of events could potentially be traced back to Maegor the Cruel.

The change overall affects nothing in the books. It’s not like this change affected who ends up with dragons. The change of Rhaena going after Sheepstealer is the thing that changes that, and not in a good way.
