The Devil in the White City Series Still in the Works Following Hulu’s Exit

As a fan who has been eagerly awaiting the adaptation of Erik Larson’s masterpiece, “The Devil in the White City,” I must say, the rollercoaster ride has been quite the spectacle! From the initial excitement of DiCaprio and Scorsese’s involvement to the twists and turns with Keanu Reeves, Todd Field, and Hulu’s decision to exit the project – it’s been a wild ride indeed.

The Devil in the White City series isn’t dead yet.

Back in February 2019, there was news that Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio would be overseeing a television series for Hulu, which is inspired by Erik Larson’s book “The Devil in the White City.” This intriguing tale of murder, sorcery, and madness at a fair that significantly impacted America was the focus of this project.

In March of 2023, it became known that the streaming service owned by Disney chose to withdraw from the project, following the departure of Keanu Reeves and director Todd Field from the series in 2022.

Prior to Hulu’s departure from the project, discussions had taken place involving Jeremy Allen White, Jude Law, and director Matt Ross about joining the team.

Speaking with Deadline, producer Stacey Sher revealed that she’s “still involved” with the project.

When asked about a potential release of The Devil in the White City series, Sher replied, “I certainly hope it’s coming soon, but it’s not immediately forthcoming. Regardless, I always keep it on my radar.” Additionally, she verified that DiCaprio, Scorsese, Rick Yorn, and Jen Davisson are still attached to the project for the series.

What is The Devil in the White City about?

The novel describes two men: Daniel Hudson Burnham, a renowned architect who constructed iconic buildings such as the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington D.C., and Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor with a dark side. While Burnham worked tirelessly to turn swampy Jackson Park into the stunning White City for the fair, Holmes capitalized on the attraction of the event and his charm to entice numerous women to their demise at his “World’s Fair Hotel,” a horrific structure located near the fairgrounds equipped with torture devices. The irony lies in the fact that while Burnham was transforming the city into a symbol of progress, Holmes was preying on its visitors. It is chilling to note that this story is based on real events.
