In case you’re not aware, “A Different World” was a groundbreaking Black sitcom that graced our screens from 1987 to 1993 on NBC. It ran for six seasons and was a spin-off of the beloved “The Cosby Show”. This series delved into the lives of students and faculty at Hillman College, a fictional historically Black college located in Virginia.
As a lifelong fan of classic television shows, I have witnessed the launch of countless careers through various series. However, none have had such a lasting impact on my own childhood as “A Different World,” which catapulted the careers of talented individuals like Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Marisa Tomei, and many others. The show’s cast was truly exceptional, featuring familiar faces like Lisa Bonet, Dawnn Lewis, Mary Alice, Darryl M. Bell, Sinbad, Charnele Brown, Cree Summer, and Glynn Turman. “A Different World” was more than just a television show; it was a cultural touchstone that brought joy, laughter, and inspiration to millions of viewers like myself. It is a testament to the power of entertainment in shaping lives and launching careers.
Starting from the initial season, it primarily focused on Denise Huxtable, played by Bonet, but after her departure, subsequent seasons concentrated on the lives of Denise’s friends, particularly Whitley and Dwayne (portrayed by Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison). Originally secondary characters in the first season, they became the main focus from season 2 onwards. The audience was treated to witnessing their romantic journey unfold gradually throughout the show, which started as a hostile relationship evolving into love.
Initially, they end up getting married, establishing thriving careers, and welcoming their firstborn into the world. As per Deadline, a new series based on A Different World will delve into the college life of Whitley and Dwayne’s daughter at their old university, Hillman College. However, it remains uncertain if this is indeed their only child. According to Deadline, the focus of the sequel is on the “youngest” daughter of the beloved pair, implying that they may have had additional children.
TV writer and producer Felicia Pride, famed for her work on shows like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Queen Sugar,” is leading the upcoming sequel series and will additionally serve as an executive producer. Moreover, she holds the position of supervising producer on the Peacock drama series “Bel-Air.” Joining Pride in executive production for the sequel are Debbie Allen, Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Reggie Bythewood, some of whom have worked on the original series previously.
Discussions about bringing back some original cast members have been reported, as there are plans for them to reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel. Since this story revolves around Whitley and Dwayne’s child, it seems logical for Guy and Hardison to return. Here’s hoping a contract will be finalized, allowing them to do so!
