Kathy Bates is Matlock: Everything to know about the new CBS procedural

As a long-time fan of legal dramas with a soft spot for Kathy Bates’ mesmerizing performances, I am beyond thrilled about the upcoming premiere of Matlock! With her stellar acting chops and the intriguing premise of a seasoned lawyer re-entering the field, this series promises to be a captivating addition to my TV lineup.

Get ready for the highly anticipated debut of “Matlock,” featuring Kathy Bates in the leading role! After being postponed due to the Hollywood strikes in 2023, this new CBS series is now set to air. Kathy Bates has described her show as “not your typical Matlock,” which has piqued our curiosity about how it will deviate from its original version.

In the trailer, we had our initial glimpse into the program, where Bates shines magnificently as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a lawyer returning to her profession after many years. She secures a position at an elite law firm, causing displeasure among Olympia, a seasoned attorney known for her zeal for justice, and also Sarah, a driven junior associate. Billy, another ambitious associate, is also less than thrilled about the new arrangement.

From the summary, it appears that Julian, who is the head of the firm and was once married to Olympia, might be the one who helps Matty land the job. His interest in her intelligence and abilities is understandable given that Matty managed to gain access to the firm despite lacking clearance and shared confidential information which boosted the firm’s income. She did this by making people think less of her while maintaining a low profile, which allowed her to work more effectively. Despite being a sweet, older Southern woman, Matty is not to be underestimated as she is discerning, curious, cunning, and very intelligent. Overlooking her abilities could prove to be a mistake.

Matlock premiere date

For the CBS Fall TV lineup of 2024, Matlock is set to be the initial scripted drama to debut on a unique night and time. Make sure you’re comfortable or have your DVR all set for Sunday, September 22 at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. The premiere episode will follow after the return of 60 Minutes.

Because of a special broadcast, the series won’t resume its usual Thursday slot until October 10th at 9 p.m., when the premiere will repeat. The second episode won’t air until October 17th. The next-day streaming will be available on Paramount+.

Kathy Bates teases what to expect from Matlock

Bates hinted that Matty and Olympia initially didn’t see eye to eye. Since our protagonist joined the same law firm, this isn’t surprising. However, as the series unfolds, these two women develop a mutual respect for each other. It’s likely that similar dynamics will emerge between Matty and the younger associates. In the show’s previews, Sarah makes more than one joke about Matty’s age and her assumptions of learning from an experienced senior partner rather than someone who hasn’t practiced law since the ’90s.

Yet, it’s noticeable that Sarah and Billy are both taken by Matty’s ability to either persuade individuals to grant her desires or converse in a manner that some might find puzzling or blunt, which others may find challenging.

What stood out the most from Bates’ discussion was his revelation that “Matlock” isn’t just a typical case-of-the-week procedural; it offers much more depth as well. During its initial season, the series presents an ongoing mystery and revisits elements learned throughout the season in later episodes. The actress is particularly eager for viewers to watch the pilot episode because it was what initially captivated her and prompted her decision to join the show.
