As a long-time Disney enthusiast, I find myself torn between my love for the magical world of Mickey Mouse and the ever-growing cost of streaming services. I remember the good old days when Disney+ was a relatively affordable way to relive my childhood memories, but now it seems like the price hikes are as frequent as the commercial breaks during classic Disney Channel shows.
Over time, the cost of streaming services has noticeably increased as they’ve been trying to generate more revenue from their subscribers. For instance, Netflix has aimed to retain its viewers for longer periods by splitting the seasons of certain shows into parts, such as “Bridgerton,” “Stranger Things,” “You,” and “Cobra Kai.” Instead of releasing full seasons at once, these shows have been divided into installments.
Despite the increase in Disney+’s subscription fee possibly making the combined bundles with Hulu, ESPN+, and MAX more appealing due to their potential cost savings, many fans find it annoying, particularly if they feel Disney+’s content library doesn’t justify the price hike, the presence of ads, or even the absence of them.
Disney+ has a fantastic collection, but it doesn’t quite match the originality and variety found on Netflix, Hulu, MAX, or Amazon Prime Video. So far, Disney+ has not fully dived into the world of streaming original content outside of some controversial Marvel shows. The longest-running originals on Disney+ are “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” which benefits greatly from its link to the popular High School Musical franchise, and “The Mandalorian” and “Star Wars: The Bad Batch,” both connected to the Star Wars universe, another Disney+ mainstay.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve noticed that Disney+ tends to focus more on expanding established franchises rather than creating entirely new ones. Shows like “Doogie Kameāloha M.D.” and “Big Shot,” both of which were fascinating, didn’t make it past two seasons, much like many other productions that didn’t surpass the two-season milestone.
In its optimal state, Disney+ delivers fresh perspectives on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars sagas. More often than not, however, it serves as a trip down memory lane with classic Disney Channel Originals, Disney and Pixar movies, along with popular installments of Marvel and Star Wars series. While this collection is undeniably substantial, there could have been a greater emphasis on producing content that ensures longevity.
Disney+ hasn’t managed to fully realize its potential as an alternative platform to Disney Channel, Freeform, and ABC, offering new original content. Moreover, it seldom produced a show as popular as those available on other streaming platforms. If you’re a die-hard Disney fan or have a family who shares the same love for Disney, and Disney+ is frequently played in your household, then the price hikes might be more palatable because of its frequent use.
As a fellow Disney enthusiast, I must admit that I’ve been relying on Disney+ primarily for catching up on new releases post-theater screenings. But let me tell you, the current pricing seems a bit steep for the content it provides, especially considering my main interest lies in the latest offerings.
Disney+’s new prices will jump to $9.99 per month with ads and $15.99 per month with no ads.
As a long-time Hulu user, I find myself feeling a bit disheartened by their recent price increase announcements. Over the years, I have come to rely on Hulu as my go-to streaming service for entertainment, and the convenience of ad-free viewing has been a game changer for me. However, with the new pricing structure, it seems that this luxury will now cost me an additional $6 per month, bringing the total to $18.99.
ESPN+’s price has also been raised to $11.99 per month.
