David Boreanaz reveals he would have been done with SEAL Team even if season 8 was happening

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I have seen countless series come and go, each one leaving its unique mark on the entertainment landscape. However, few shows have captured my attention like “SEAL Team”. Premiering back in 2017, this gripping drama about a Navy SEAL team tackling dangerous missions around the globe has been a rollercoaster ride of emotion and adrenaline.

As a devoted gamer, I’m thrilled to share that the epic saga of SEAL Team is about to reach its climax with its seventh and final season! The charismatic David Boreanaz has offered some tantalizing insights into what lies ahead for his character and why he believes this is the perfect time to bring the story to a close.

The series, initially airing on CBS in 2017, follows a Navy SEAL team engaged in risky operations globally. Boreanaz portrays Jason Hayes, the Bravo Unit’s commander. During its fifth season, the show shifted to Paramount+, enabling it to tackle mature themes such as strong language and graphic violence.

The show has been successful, and the sixth season concluded with Jason vocalizing about his injuries and their impact at a medal presentation, an issue the military overlooked. This could potentially cause trouble as we move into the seventh season, which has been confirmed as its last.

Although some viewers might feel disappointed, Boreanaz stated to TVInsider that if the series was renewed for an eighth season, he would likely still depart because he feels this is an ideal conclusion for the character of Jason, who continues to grapple with his health and psychological struggles. Despite these challenges, Boreanaz’s character has bravely confronted his issues while remaining steadfast in his role as a team leader.

For us, it’s like, alright, the trauma is your first kill. How do you deal with that? So starting the season it was like, okay, this is the perfect way to wrap that cycle up for this character. For me, I knew that that was the right way and I knew going in before the writers’ strike that I was done. I had expressed my interest not to do the show anymore. I was finished regardless of even if they wanted to do two more seasons, one more season, I was done. So then the writers’ strike hit and it became six months later and that had already been decided.

Boreanaz expressed that after numerous years with the team, Jason is finding the weight of it all too heavy. It isn’t merely the grief over lost comrades or the impact on his personal life; it also stems from his doubts about the military, which have been challenged by questionable decisions made for political reasons by those in command. He feels that he hasn’t been able to make as big a difference as he had hoped.

It’s understandable that Boreanaz could have been seeking a change, given his extensive television career since his iconic role as Angel on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff, as well as his leading role in the long-running FOX series Bones. With SEAL Team demanding a lot of physical effort, it seems fair that the actor is due for some rest.

Before that happens, Jason and Bravo Team have one last big mission to undertake.

What’s coming for Jason in SEAL Team season 7?

In his remarks, Boreanaz gave some insights into what Season 7 might entail. The storyline commences with Bravo being given a seemingly routine mission in Sweden as retribution for Jason’s outspokenness. However, a terrorist attack unexpectedly occurs, and Bravo takes charge of tracking down the perpetrators. Additionally, a new recruit named Drew (played by Beau Knapp) is introduced, and Boreanaz hinted that his arrival might stir up conflicts within the team.

I think Jason knows more than what Drew’s putting out or what he’s hiding. Jason’s peeked into that door. He knows because A, he’s been there, [and] B, he has dealt with it and continues to deal with the trauma. You can try to deal with it, heal some of the trauma, but the process is always going to be there but you just handle it differently. That’s what Jason does. So he can kind of read Drew pretty quickly. It’s like this guy comes on and he’s like, “I don’t want anything to do with [everyone],” and Jason’s like, “Dude, I’ve seen this before. I’m a few steps ahead of you. When that time comes, that vulnerability, I will be able to give insight into where I was at that time, how it will help you.” And that’s family.

Boreanaz hinted that there will likely be some strife between Jason and girlfriend Mandy (Jessica ParĂ©), but he suggested this could potentially result in their marriage. Additionally, he disclosed he’ll be directing an episode, but his closing remarks might give fans pause: “I’m looking forward to seeing Jason Hayes; perhaps a flag draped over his casket at the end of this series. Who knows?”

It might surprise fans, but it could be the concluding chapter for Jason’s story. Regardless, Boreanaz has openly expressed that he planned for season 7 to mark the end of his journey on SEAL Team, and he is prepared to bid farewell in a triumphant manner.

SEAL Team season 7 premieres Sunday, August 11 on Paramount+.
