As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for compelling narratives and gripping performances, I can’t help but feel exhilarated about the upcoming movie, Sarah’s Oil. The cast, which includes familiar faces from beloved shows like The Walking Dead and Star Trek: Discovery, promises an intriguing blend of talent that will surely breathe life into the story of Sarah Rector.

It’s been announced that filming for the theatrical drama “Sarah’s Oil,” produced by Amazon MGM Studios, has come to an end. The stars of this upcoming movie include Sonequa Martin-Green, her husband Kendric Green, known for their roles in “The Walking Dead,” and Garret Dillahunt, famed from “Fear the Walking Dead.”

The tale of Sarah’s Oil is influenced by Tonya Bolden’s book titled “Searching for Sarah Rector: The Wealthiest Black Girl in America“. In the early 1900s, the narrative centers around 11-year-old Sarah Rector, a girl of mixed African American and Native American heritage born in the Oklahoma Territory. She was granted about 160 acres of unproductive land as part of the merging of the Indian and Oklahoma territories to form the state of Oklahoma. Although the land wasn’t suitable for farming, Sarah held faith that it would be oil-rich. Her belief proved true, and as she confronted the avaricious oil tycoons, with the assistance of her friends and kin, she made history by becoming the first African American woman to amass millions.

Sarah’s Oil is a film penned by Cyrus Nowrasteh based on the screenplay he co-authored with Betsy Giffen Nowrasteh. It will be directed by John Shepherd in collaboration with Derrick Williams, Kingdom Story Company’s Kevin Downes, Andrew Erwin, and Daryl Lefever, The Wonder Project’s Jon Erwin, and Levi from Wyldwood Productions.

In this movie, Zachary Levi takes on the role of Bert Smith, while Naya Desir-Johnson portrays Sarah Rector. Additionally, Sonequa Martin-Green, Garret Dillahunt, Bridget Regan, Kenric Green, Adyan Copes, and Stelio Savante are also part of the cast.

Sarah’s Oil will premiere in theaters on December 25, 2025.
