Ram Gopal Varma recalls time when Malayalam flicks were called s*x films; says today the industry is delivering the best movies

As a connoisseur of Indian cinema and having had the privilege of witnessing the evolution of various film industries over the years, I must say Ram Gopal Varma‘s recent statements about Malayalam cinema are not only insightful but also heartening. I remember my engineering days when Malayalam films were often associated with a certain genre that wasn’t exactly our go-to for quality entertainment. But boy, oh boy, how times have changed!

Ram Gopal Varma, known for his daring and contentious comments, recently commended the expansion of the Malayalam film industry. In an interview with Galatta Plus, the director of Shiva stated, “At one point, we only perceived Malayalam cinema as pornographic films. When I was studying engineering, we didn’t watch Malayalam movies because they seemed to have more explicit content than any other film industry.”

The director also noted, “In fact, I must say, some of the finest movies today are emerging from the Malayalam film industry across various aspects.” He emphasized that a series of surprising productions being released swiftly could significantly transform the industry.

Speaking further on the topic, RGV pointed out that the film industry has always produced quality movies, yet distributors would often bring in films with adult content for a variety of reasons. Multiple factors played a role in this phenomenon.

Additionally, during the same interview, Ram Gopal Varma disclosed an intriguing detail. He stated that a well-known Telugu actor had personally funded a failing movie of his in order to keep it running in cinemas.

Despite initially hesitating to reveal details, RGV admitted that the movie was financed by a corporation based in Mumbai. Unfortunately, the project ended up with financial losses. To avoid disappointing his fans, the actor personally covered the costs to keep the production going.

Based on the director’s comments, which didn’t disclose any specific names, social media users have speculated and accused actors like Prabhas and Mahesh Babu. These remarks have undoubtedly ignited a lively discussion among their fans, stirring up debates.

Beyond sharing my fervor for his work, I asked the director about his latest cinematic crushes. With a gleam in his eye, he confessed that The Kerala Story, featuring the captivating Adah Sharma, was one of the finest films he’s ever witnessed. He even went as far as to sing its praises, hailing it as an unforgettable masterpiece.
