‘Daemon Is the Night King’ Theory: Is It Real? Is He a Targaryen?

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of immersion in the realm of Westeros, I must confess that the Night King theory surrounding Daemon Targaryen has been a captivating enigma. However, after much contemplation and rewatching every scene from House of the Dragon Season 2, I’ve come to the conclusion that Daemon is as far from being the Night King as Drogon is from a dragonfly.

For the past season of “House of the Dragon,” a popular fan theory has suggested that Daemon Targaryen might be the Night King. With the end of Season 2, we can finally explore the truth behind this intriguing speculation – could it be possible that the Night King is indeed a Targaryen, and if so, was it Daemon? Let’s delve deeper into the potential identity of the Night King to see if he could have been connected to the Targaryen line.

Is Daemon the Night King in House of the Dragon?

No, Daemon cannot be the Night King as the ruler of White Walkers is supposed to be much older.

The idea that the Night King is similar to Daemon arises from various characteristics exhibited by the White Walkers’ leader. For instance, his resistance to fire and effortless control over Viserion are traits he has in common with Daemon. Moreover, the battle between Daemon and Aemond at God’s Eye initially sparked this theory.

‘Daemon Is the Night King’ Theory: Is It Real? Is He a Targaryen?

As a devoted fan of the Targaryen dynasty and a reader of George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” I can’t help but speculate about potential spoilers for Season 3 of House of the Dragon. Having read through countless pages of epic battles, betrayals, and dragon lore, I have come to trust that the showrunners will remain faithful to the source material. In the book, the rivalry between Daemon Targaryen and Aemond reaches its climax in a deadly duel on their dragons Caraxes and Vhagar. This fierce encounter ultimately results in the tragic demise of all three – Daemon leaping from Caraxes onto Aemond and Vhagar, plunging his sword, Dark Sister, into Aemond’s blind eye. The trio then plummeted into God’s Eye lake, a fateful end to a long-standing feud. The suspense is palpable as we eagerly await the unfolding of this gripping tale on screen.

From the lake, Caraxes emerged but perished. Subsequently, the remains of Aemond and Vhagar were uncovered as well. However, Daemon’s body was never located. Many assumed he had passed away, while others speculated that he spent the rest of his days with Nettles – a character seemingly omitted from House of the Dragon’s narrative.

Given the upcoming event, spectators speculated that Daemon might have transformed into the Night King, thus forging a connection between Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Yet, this supposition is unfounded, as the final episode of House of the Dragon Season 2 clearly demonstrates.

It’s common knowledge that the Night King, originally one of the First Men, arrived in Westeros from Essos more than 12,000 years prior to the Targaryen Conquest. This means that the Targaryens didn’t exist yet when a being from the forest transformed this First Man into the Night King.

In addition, when Daemon witnessed the vision of the Night King’s impending attack in the finale of House of the Dragon Season 2, he was filled with terror. This fear didn’t suggest that he would transform into a monster himself, but rather, it showed that he was cognizant of the Night King and his looming threat. Consequently, this casts doubt on the theory that Daemon is the Night King.

Is the Night King a Targaryen?

In addition to Daemon, another idea proposes that Jon Snow’s true father might have been Rhaegar Targaryen or another member of the Targaryen family, but this notion is inconsistent. The Night King, as believed, has existed for approximately 10,000 years, making him much older than the entire Targaryen dynasty. Therefore, in the context of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon lore, it’s impossible for a Targaryen to be the Night King.
