As a fervent admirer of Ilaiyaraaja’s magnificent compositions and a keen observer of the Tamil film industry, I find myself both intrigued and disheartened by the ongoing saga surrounding Manjummel Boys.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the buzz surrounding the Malayalam survival thriller, Manjummel Boys this year. Unfortunately, not all the attention it’s received has been positive. In fact, earlier this year, the renowned composer Ilaiyaraaja took legal action against the filmmakers for unauthorized use of his song “Kanmani Anbodu.” Originally composed by him in 1991 for the movie Gunaa, it’s crucial that proper copyright procedures are followed to respect the work and legacy of talented artists like Ilaiyaraaja.
In the most recent news, Cinema Express states that the creators of the survival movie have given their music composer a payment of 60 lakh rupees as reimbursement. Initially, Ilaiyaraaja requested a compensation of 2 crores due to the incredible success of the film. Yet, after negotiations, the team behind Manjummel Boys only paid out 60 lakhs.
While Manjummel Boys’ producers asserted they obtained necessary permissions from the music companies owning the rights to the song, Ilaiyaraaja’s legal representative argued that he was the composer of the song and possesses full rights to all his original compositions. In essence, the notice issued to the film team stated: “Our client’s approval, license, or content are indispensable for using such music in any form.”
Ilaiyaraaja asserted that his work, as per the Copyright Act of 1957, is protected by law. He emphasized that using his creations commercially without his consent and failure to pay royalties directly infringes upon these legal rights.
It’s worth noting that Ilaiyaraaja has issued copyright notices in the past. In May of this year, he took action against the producers of Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, for using the song Va Va Pakkam Va from the 1983 movie Thanga Magan without his permission. Back in 2017, Ilaiyaraaja also sent a copyright notice to his frequent collaborator and singer SP Balasubrahmanyam for performing his songs on stage without obtaining the necessary rights first.
By the way, it’s worth noting that the creators of Manjummel Boys are facing more than just one legal issue. In fact, this past May, a complaint was lodged against them regarding a 7 crore scam involving one of the film’s investors. The allegations state that the makers intentionally deceived the investor and did not use any of their own money for the project.
