As a longtime follower of true crime stories and a resident of Florida, I can’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction knowing that justice has finally been served in the Mike Williams murder case. For nearly two decades, his family suffered while the killers evaded justice, but thankfully, the relentless pursuit of truth by investigators eventually led to their conviction.

“CBS 48 Hours” episode “Cold-Blooded Killer” delves back into the Mike Williams murder case, where the convicted killers managed to escape justice for close to two decades. This intriguing episode is set to air on the network this coming Saturday, August 3, 2024, at 9 p.m. ET. A summary reveals, “A father sets out for a hunt in a Florida lake and mysteriously disappears. Many assumed he was devoured by alligators – but it wasn’t his mother who held that belief. Seventeen years later, shocking courtroom disclosures: it was murder.”

In December of 2000, Mike Williams, a family man from Florida, embarked on a solo duck-hunting expedition to Lake Seminole and failed to return. For many years, authorities have pondered the possibility that Williams met a tragic end by drowning in the swampy lake, as his body was never recovered. They surmised that alligators, known for their high activity in and around the area, might have consumed him.

17 years after my tragic death, the authorities finally cracked the case and traced it back to those who took my life. My best friend, Brian Winchester, admitted to my murder, striking a deal for immunity. Shockingly, he also implicated my then-wife, Denise Williams, who was having an affair with him at the time. In 2019, Denise faced trial and was found guilty of her role in my killing.

As reported by the Florida Department of Corrections, Mike Williams’ alleged killers, Denise Williams and Brian Winchester, are currently incarcerated. Specifically, Denise Williams is serving a 30-year term at the Florida Women’s Reception Center for charges related to the murder of Williams. On the other hand, Winchester, who has not been charged in connection with the decades-old murder case, is housed at the Madison Correctional Institution on unrelated matters.

As a dedicated fan recounting events, I’d say: On December 16, 2000, as reported by Tallahassee Democrat, Mike Williams, a 31-year-old estate appraiser, departed for a duck-hunting trip at Lake Seminole. However, when he didn’t return, a search was initiated. Unfortunately, after extensive efforts, no sign of him was found, except for his boat, waders, and board. The area exhibited heavy alligator activity, leading authorities to suspect that Williams may have drowned, with the possibility that alligators consumed his remains, leaving no trace behind. This tragic scenario painted a heart-wrenching picture for his family as a young father was seemingly lost.

2001 saw a judge rule that Mike Williams met his untimely end through an accidental drowning. Consequently, his widow, Denise, received $1.75 million from life insurance claims. However, Mike’s mother, Cheryl, was not convinced by the crocodile theory and pressed for further investigation. In response to her persistence, authorities reopened a missing person’s case in 2004.

Over the course of ten years, detectives uncovered evidence suggesting that Mike Williams’ disappearance was not a mere accident but suspicious. Their attention turned towards his former wife, Denise Williams, who had received a substantial insurance payout following the incident. After five years, Brian Winchester and Denise got married, and it wasn’t until many years later that they confessed to being responsible for Mike Williams’ death.

In the year 2012, Denise Williams and Brian Winchester parted ways, and Denise filed for divorce three years afterwards. However, in 2016, Winchester abducted Denise, keeping her captive in her own car under threat of a gun. She subsequently reported this armed kidnapping to the authorities, leading to Winchester’s arrest. Oxygen reported that during the ongoing investigation into Mike Williams’ disappearance, detectives questioned both parties more intensively. Eventually, in 2017, Winchester admitted to the murder.

Brian Winchester admitted to shooting Mike Williams in the head in Lake Seminole. He also told detectives about his long-term affair with Denise Williams, which began in 1997. Winchester claimed Denise was unwilling to divorce Mike, fearing she might lose her daughter in the process. He also agreed to testify against Denise in exchange for immunity in the murder case and only faced kidnapping and aggravated assault charges. He received a 20-year prison sentence.

In the year 2019, only Mike Williams’ wife at the time, Denise Williams, was brought to trial for her involvement in his murder. She stood accused of various offenses such as conspiring to commit murder, first-degree murder, and aiding after the fact. After a trial, a jury found her guilty in December of that year, resulting in her receiving a 30-year prison sentence.
