This underrated Netflix original series turns 10 in 2024

As an ardent fan of historical dramas, I can’t help but reminisce about the grandeur that was “Marco Polo”. Ten years have flown by since its debut on Netflix, and it’s hard to believe this masterpiece is turning a decade! It’s been a part of my binge-watching journey ever since its inception, transporting me back to the 13th century with every episode.

Yippee! A Netflix original series that hasn’t received enough recognition will be turning 10 this year. Do you know which show I’m referring to? Here’s a clue: The title of the show is also the name of a game you play with friends in water. Let me build some suspense… It’s none other than the historical drama, Marco Polo!

As a long-time fan of period dramas, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when I think about the release of the first season of “The Crown” on Netflix back in 2014. It was a series that instantly captured my heart and transported me to another era, one that I had always been fascinated by. Now, as we approach the 10th anniversary of its debut, it seems fitting to revisit this masterpiece once more. The intricate storytelling, the stunning costumes, and the incredible performances make “The Crown” a must-watch for any fan of historical fiction. So mark your calendars for Dec. 12, 2024, and let’s celebrate this milestone together by revisiting the royal family on screen!

John Fusco crafted the narrative of Marco Polo, which is largely inspired by the true-life exploits of the Venetian traveler Marco Polo. Set in the 13th century, the tale primarily revolves around Marco Polo’s association with Kublai Khan, the Mongolian ruler, where he gains trust and friendship as a valued counselor.

In the primary role of Marco Polo, renowned Italian actor Lorenzo Richelmy shines in the Netflix historical series. Beyond this period drama, you may recall Richelmy from his performances as Gianluca Barzaghi in the British series “Fifteen-Love” and as Roberto Aldani in the British production “Hotel Portofino”. Accompanying Richelmy in the cast are Benedict Wong portraying Kublai Khan, Joan Chen, Rick Yune, Amr Waked, Remy Hii, Zhu Zhu, Tom Wu, Mahesh Jadu, Olivia Cheng, and numerous other distinguished actors.

Regrettably, the period series “Marco Polo” came to an abrupt end in December 2016 after just two seasons on Netflix. While Netflix never disclosed the specific reason for its cancellation, it is widely believed that the high production costs and low viewership led to the decision. Fans were disappointed as they hoped to follow Marco Polo’s story further, but Netflix remained firm in their choice not to renew the show.

Here’s what some critics had to say about Marco Polo season 1 via Rotten Tomatoes:

Shot primarily in Kazakhstan and Malaysia, the series is richly atmospheric, lavishly produced, and artfully rendered.

David Hiltbrand

You start the hour sweating another bloody, boobsy, broadswords-and-hideous-men periodfest. Before the end, you realize there are worse things. Like being boring. Somewhere in the middle of episode 2, though, Marco Polo becomes surprisingly watchable.

As a parent who has navigated the treacherous waters of selecting appropriate TV shows for my family, I can confidently say that “Marco Polo” is not one for younger viewers. Having spent countless hours watching this period piece, I can attest to its mature content. The strong language, nudity, and sex, coupled with numerous violent scenes, make it unsuitable for children’s eyes.

You might want to watch a 30-minute special called “Marco Polo: One Hundred Eyes” on Netflix too. This show delves into the backstory of the blind monk warrior known as Hundred Eyes.
